2025 Educator Appreciation Day

In celebration of Educator Appreciation Day, the Recognitions Committee at Emory School of Medicine sent out a call for nominations for educators across the school who go above and beyond the call of duty as teachers and mentors. Emory educators were nominated by their peers and colleagues for their passion and skills to educate, encourage and support scholars and learners across the university.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Brooj Abro

Dr. Brooj Abro is a distinguished educator and mentor, who has significantly enhanced pathology and multidisciplinary education. As lead editor of The Washington Manual of Hematopathology, Dr. Abro has mentored numerous trainees from Washington University and Emory University, collaborating with them as co-authors on several chapters. Dr. Abro actively mentors fellows and residents, promoting collaboration on research projects and presentations. As Associate Director of the Hematology Lab, she is also enhancing educational initiatives for hematology technicians. Dr. Abro delivers didactics to pathology trainees, teaches in the Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program and oversees the hematopathology rotation for heme/onc fellows.

Department of Pediatrics Melissa Adams

Dr. Melissa Adams is a wonderful colleague to learn from and an even better support for our residents and learners. She is an eager educator whether leading a brief clinic chalk talk or larger group discussion of a complicated or nuanced medical process or diagnosis. Dr. Adams is tireless in her ability to engage others in reviewing the literature as she endeavors to teach and practice evidence-based medicine.

Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Mirtha Aguilar-Alvarado

As Associate Program Director of the Emory Family Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Mirtha Aguilar organizes weekly resident didactics, emphasizing hands-on, interactive, and cross-specialty sessions. Her incorporation of regular procedure workshops has increased resident knowledge and comfort with common family medicine procedures. Dr. Aguilar has also developed valuable point-of-care ultrasound curricula for both residents and faculty to keep the program at the forefront of modern medical care.

Department of Medicine Khaalisha Ajala

Dr. Khaalisha Ajala created an innovative pathways program to engage undergraduates in internal medicine conferences, and post-conference support. She engages faculty physicians who are active members of our specialty’s professional societies who want to mentor or coach learners. She also arranges supportive opportunities for learners to meet with hospitalists at national and regional conferences, with follow-up sessions for mentorship and skills building. Dr. Ajala also facilitates post-session support (e.g., mock interviews, scholarship).

Department of Medicine Mikhail Akbashev

Dr. Mikhail Akbashev knew early on that teaching would be core to his career, and he has been recognized by learners at all levels for his commitment, clarity, and engaging style of imparting information. He prioritizes bedside learning and fosters autonomy in his residents and students, encouraging them to base their plans on their own decision-making, under his insightful guidance. Dr. Akbashev's learners view him as relatable and a positive influence, as he is “deeply committed to the mentorship and growth of everyone in the team” and “goes above and beyond in community building and fostering a sense of closeness."

Department of Neurology Casey Albin

Dr. Casey Albin is an outstanding educator in neurology and neurocritical care, known for her ability to teach complex concepts through real-world cases and simulation. She excels at helping learners develop problem-solving skills and is consistently enthusiastic. Dr. Albin's innovative use of simulation and commitment to tackling difficult topics makes her a standout mentor and teacher across all levels of medical training.

Department of Medicine Shirine Allam

Since taking over directorship of the pulmonary and critical care fellowship in the early days of the COVID pandemic, Dr. Shirine Allam has reimagined several aspects of the training program, including the development of a comprehensive and more impartial application review process for applicants, and creating new educational experiences for current fellows. Her approach to program design, her mentorship, and her staunch advocacy have profoundly shaped the next generation of pulmonary and critical care graduates from our program. In all that she does for our trainees, Dr. Allam shows integrity, compassion, and a deep dedication to the personal and professional development of her learners.

Dr. Emily Allen has mentored several genetic counseling student "focus" research projects per year for at least the past 5 years, resulting in many publications and accepted conference abstracts for the students. Dr. Allen creates a supportive, welcoming environment for the student researchers, which fosters excitement for the subject matter and confidence in their ability to perform research in their careers.

Department of Anesthesiology Amber Allred

Dr. Amber Allred exemplifies educational excellence through her remarkable ability to extract practical teaching points from complex clinical scenarios. She balances academic knowledge with clinical application, ensuring residents and students develop comprehensive skills. Dr. Allred's composed demeanor under pressure serves as a powerful teaching model, demonstrating to trainees the critical importance of calm decision-making in anesthesiology. Dr. Allred's teaching methodology seamlessly integrates strong clinical practices with essential academic foundations, creating well-rounded future anesthesiologists who are both knowledgeable and capable in challenging situations.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Malak Althgafi

Dr. Malak Althgafi is a dedicated and visionary educator who invests deeply in the growth of both trainees and junior faculty. She champions innovation by supporting resident-led initiatives—most notably helping launch an intraoperative long-read sequencing project by engaging over 20 faculty members across multiple departments in the neuro-oncology group and personally funding the initial capital. Her mentorship has led to standout achievements, including the only resident trainee oral presentation at Research Day and a fellow scoring above the 99th percentile nationally. Dr. Althgafi also mentors junior faculty, helping them develop individualized professional development plans that foster long-term success..

Department of Dermatology Emily Altman

Before joining Emory Dermatology last year, Dr. Emily Altman was the founding Dermatology Residency Program Director and Vice Chair of Education at the University of New Mexico. Since her arrival, she has shown tremendous passion and talent for education through clinical teaching while attending the inpatient consult service at Emory and Grady and helping to launch a resident clinic at The Emory Clinic. She jumps at opportunities to share cases in with residents, students and faculty through excellent clinical unknown sessions. Dr. Altman is a model educator!

Dr. Omayma Amin is committed to ensuring that fellows, residents, and medical students receive exposure to the fundamentals of pediatric infectious disease. Dr. Amin shares the thought processes of a pediatric infectious disease physician with students and models the importance of reviewing the literature when data is needed to inform decision-making.

Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology Martha Arellano

Dr. Martha Arellano has served as the program director of the Hematology/Oncology fellowship for seven years and during this time, she has been a steadfast advocate and dedicated educator for the fellows. She has revised and updated the curriculum and structure to suit the needs of today's learners, shown a commitment to wellness and balance, and has expanded the program markedly through prestigious grants to increase the number of practicing classical hematologists, a huge unmet need. She is an asset to the department who has been responsible for the excellent education and training of many.

Department of Ophthalmology Sruthi Arepalli

Dr. Sruthi Arepalli has taken on a new role as our Co-Associate Residency Program Director. She has provided tremendous energy with a revamp of our residency mentorship program. Dr. Arepalli has also focused on our ACGME review status with positive approaches to our prior citations. Dr. Arepalli is already known as an excellent teacher despite Dr. Arepalli's short tenure in our department.

Dr. Alex Arges is an incredible educator! In addition to serving as a teaching attending for our inpatient EUH wards, Dr. Arges regularly delivers resident lunch conference, serves as a resident journal club mentor, and recently joined the core faculty for our new Med-Peds residency.

Department of Anesthesiology Sona Arora

Dr. Sona Arora is a dedicated educator who has been a pillar of the Department of Anesthesiology for over a decade. She designs impactful learning experiences for residents and contributes key clinical insights during Grady morning conferences. Dr. Arora is renowned for her rigorous oral board preparation and her ability to teach across disciplines, including medical students, anesthesia trainees, surgeons, and colleagues. Dr. Desiree Ashong has been so helpful this past year as a teacher for M3s on the OBGYN Clerkship. She has revived her past role as the lecturer on hypertension and students have commented on how engaging her teaching style is! She has also stepped in to assist us with planned (and last-minute) teaching opportunities, always providing information in a thorough and lively manner. It's been great to see more of Dr. Ashong this year and we are thrilled to be able to utilize Dr. Ashong's talents to enhance medical student learning!

Dr. Wendy Baer is Medical Director of Psychiatric Oncology at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. In this role, Dr. Baer has been an outstanding educator for the Department of Psychiatry residents and the consultation liaison psychiatry fellows. She provides dedicated time to mentor our clinical fellows during their Winship rotation and provides well received lectures on oncology, pain and professionalism for our psychiatry residents. Dr. Vipin Bansal is an exceptional educator and mentor whose dedication to teaching has profoundly shaped the training of countless anesthesia residents. Dr. Bansal creates a supportive environment where learners feel confident, engaged, and inspired. Department of Medicine Sivan Ben-Moshe

Dr. Sivan Ben-Moshe is a transformative medical educator whose work has profoundly enriched the curriculum and student experience. As Director of Aging and Dying Week, she has innovated content to foster compassion alongside clinical knowledge in caring for older adults and patients at the end of life. She introduced Holocaust education to the medical school, often providing students their only exposure to this essential history. Department of Pediatrics Moira Black

Dr. Moira Black is an exceptional pediatric epileptologist with a passion for resident and fellow education. Dr. Black is the chair of our child neurology clinical competency committee and leads our child neurology sub-internship program. She has a passion for epilepsy that is infectious to our learners. Dr. Black guides our residents to be more adept at reading EEGs, helps with clinical decision making, and encourages them to become independent learners.

Dr. Andrew Bowman is an excellent educator for learners of all levels. Dr. Bowman has co-directed an M2 elective rotation, given lectures to Anesthesiologists' Assistants students, mentored residents, created a fellowship curriculum, and taught physicians internationally on multiple global health trips.

Dr. Laura Brachman is an accomplished educator with a strong focus on communication in healthcare. She is an active member of the Academy of Communication in Healthcare (ACH), a national organization dedicated to improving communication skills among healthcare providers to enhance interactions with both patients and colleagues. In her role as an outpatient attending for the Palliative Care Fellowship, and through her service as an OPEX (Objective Practice Experience) attending, she demonstrates exceptional dedication to clinical teaching. Dr. William Bundy is an exceptional educator and Director of Simulation for the Anesthesiology Assistant program at Emory University Hospital. Dr. Philip Carullo is Director of Education for Pediatric Anesthesiology and a dynamic educator whose energy and innovation have transformed learning across the department. Department of Human Genetics Tamara Caspary

Dr. Tamara Caspary obtained an NIH T32 grant for a predoctoral training program in genetics, which she has directed since 2023. As director, she launched a number of new initiatives focused on student career development and quality of faculty mentorship. She also recently took on a new role in graduate education as Associate Dean for Strategic Projects, with the goal of developing a comprehensive grant-writing program for students and facilitating student-faculty collaborations. On top of these leadership roles in graduate education, Dr. Caspary remains active in classroom teaching, directing and lecturing in a foundations course for Genetics.

Dr. Caroline Coleman is a nationally recognized educator and innovator in digital scholarship and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). As site clerkship director at the Atlanta VA, she mentors students and residents through ward teaching, rapid response simulations, and a robust POCUS curriculum. Dr. Coleman is a frequent conference speaker, associate editor for the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, and contributor to The Curbsiders podcast. Her educational graphics and podcast episodes reach broad audiences. Dr. Coleman fosters a supportive, engaging learning environment at every level and has won multiple teaching awards, including the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine competition and the Golden Apple.

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics Betsy Collins

Dr. Betsy Collins is a skilled and passionate clinician. She tailors her clinical care to not only the patient, but also the learner. She is skilled in multiple surgical techniques that are now becoming obsolete in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Collins aims to incorporate teaching those obsolete techniques to both medical students and residents and is an asset to our department.

Dr. Megan Collins is a superb junior faculty member in the division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She has been selected for the Academic Pediatric Association Educational Scholars program which is a 3 year program dedicated to the development of the next generation of educational leaders and scholars. Dr. Collins is lead mentor for a Pediatric Residency Quality Improvement initiative focused on Improving Resident Feedback with an in-house Nocturnist program. She volunteers regularly to teach Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) curriculum lectures for our students, residents and fellows on the PHM service.

Dr. Randi Connor-Schuler is an effective and knowledgeable educator who is very giving with her time. Every year that she teaches critical care ultrasound topics to ultrasound fellows, she takes the time to update her slides with both the latest literature and also clinical cases that help reinforce the principles she is teaching in the classroom. In addition to this, Dr. Connor-Schuler also takes these fellows under her wing and will meet them in her nonclinical time to do bedside teaching to help reinforce the technical skills and clinical integration of the knowledge she imparted in the classroom. She is truly a gem.

Dr. Paul DeSandre leads our palliative care curriculum for Emergency Medicine and has been a pioneer in creating a required rotation for post- graduate second year residents and scheduling all of the residents when he is on service to ensure that he is able to train them from his perspective of both an Emergency Physician and Palliative Medicine physician. He has also led and taught the didactic curriculum to include teaching on death disclosure, goals of care and breaking bad news.

Dr. Katie Gielissen is a consummate educator. Dr. Gielissen started the first and only Med-Peds residency program in Georgia and serves as program director. She is on national education committees with the Society for General Internal Medicine and co-directs their med ed scholarship for faculty development program. Locally, she co-directs our Graduate Medical Education (GME)-wide med ed research track and directs the med-peds interest group and medical student elective for budding future physicians. Dr. Jeremy Jones has been residency program director for the Emory Ophthalmology Residency Program for a decade. In this capacity, he has mentored dozens of residents as they matured into ophthalmologists, teaching them the basics of the glaucoma exam and glaucoma laser therapy in their first years, the fundamentals of cataract evaluations and basics of cataract surgery as second years, and complex cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery as senior residents. Dr. Jones has also mentored and lectured to hundreds of medical students interested in ophthalmology. He is a supremely calm, collected, and kind clinical and surgical teacher.

Kathy started and designed the Master of Bioethics degree, designed and leads the clinical ethics program at Emory Health Care, created an innovative way to train residents in ethics (almost impossible across 100 residency programs), designed and was the driving force behind the Ethics.

Dr. Liang Liu is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Emory University and the Director of the Advanced Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship. She deserves to be recognized for her contributions to our department and the Ultrasound community nationally. Dr. Liu completed the ACEP teaching fellowship and used that to propel her forward, and she now leads national committees within ACEP and SAEM. Her unique teaching, using gamification and ultrasound techniques, has led to her winning numerous teaching awards and faculty of the year awards within our department. She is also a founding member of an ultrasound fellow educcation collaboration.

Dr. Jennifer Lom is a dedicated teacher who creates a welcoming learning environment and continuously strives to improve her teaching skills. Dr. Jose Navarrete, nicknamed the "professor," is an outstanding source of knowledge for our nephrology fellows, and he is a consistent nephrology educator for the internal medicine residency noon conferences at Emory Midtown. Dr. Navarrete mentors numerous fellows and was selected as their "Scholarly Activity Faculty Member of the Year." He is a consistent presence in our outpatient curriculum, and fellows consistently give glowing remarks about their time in his home dialysis clinic. Dr. Navarrete's enthusiasm for teaching is palpable and numerous former trainees like myself attempt to emulate Dr. Navarrete's teaching style.

Dr. Jessica Nave is a phenomenal clinician educator! In addition to being a beloved attending on our EUH ward teaching teams, Dr. Nave has spent years directing the resident's resuscitation training as well as delivering lunch conference for the EUH residents. She is also a fantastic educator for faculty. Dr. Nave routinely delivers lectures locally, including a recent Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds. She also gives national talks, such as her upcoming lecture at the Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Meeting. Dr. Nave is frequently sought out for her expertise in ACLS and CDI.

Dr. Rebecca Neustein has taken on a new role as our Co-Associate Residency Program Director. She has completely revamped our resident lecture schedule and personally ensured that these lectures take place with excellent resident attendance. Dr. Pretesh Patel has a passion for teaching, and leads educational efforts at institutional and national levels. He previously served for five years as the Physician Residency Program Director and has been a course Co-Director for two institutional courses. Dr. Faisal Saeed is the Surgical Fellowship Director and Genitourinary Pathology Rotation Director within the Department of Pathology. He recently organized the GAP meeting at a regional level as part of community outreach. As part of PEACE (Partnership of Emory, Yale, and Africa for Cancer and Education) an international outreach effort, he gave educational lectures to serve underprivileged African nations. Dr. Reza Sameni’s teaching and mentorship reflect his dedication to education and Emory. His first course at Emory was BMI 532: Model-Based Machine Learning, which received superb course evaluations. One of his students wrote that he was one of the best instructors at Emory, which is high praise for a department with many capable and dedicated instructors. Another student wrote that this was the best course that they had taken at Emory so far. Yet another student added that “[d]espite thorough analysis, no significant weaknesses were identified,” providing an unequivocal vote of confidence for Dr. Sameni’s contributions to the classroom.

Department of Human Genetics Rossana Sanchez Russo

Dr. Rossana Sanchez Russo is long-standing champion of education in the Division of Medical Genetics. She has taught medical students, residents, and colleagues the nuances and principles of medical genetics. Dr. Sanchez Russo has done this at the bedside, where her skills in dysmorphology and the art and science of medicine fascinate trainees and entice some to consider medical genetics as a career. She is also a skilled lecturer. She is patient, kind and enthusiastic. Dr. Sanchez Russo was recently named program director of our residency programs in medical genetics and genomics and pediatrics/medical genetics and genomics.

Dr. Abeed Sarker created and taught BMI 555: Applied Biomedical Natural Language Processing, which provides graduate students with an introduction to NLP and LLMs for health and healthcare. His students raved about his enthusiasm and dedication to them and the course; this is particularly remarkable because Dr. Sarker is also the department’s Vice Chair for Research. The combination of biomedical NLP content, which will be fundamental for advancing healthcare in the years to come, and Dr. Sarker, who is committed to teaching and mentorship, enriches the quality of education for our graduate students in particular and our institution in general.

Dr. Joanna Schindler is a premier educator! She is the Director for Medical Education for the Department of Anesthesiology and does an outstanding job in this role. To date, Dr. Schindler has mentored hundreds of students applying to Anesthesiology. Not only does she oversee the students rotations as they rotate through anesthesia, but she also mentors them throughout the entire application process even beyond match day. Dr. Maurice Selby is a perfect example of serving the students in the ER and the great good. Dr. Selby is a caring and compassionate clinician and teacher in the ER. He has also developed and run a program to mentor students interested in emergency medicine from schools with limited or no EM mentorship. Students apply and are accepted into a 2-year program that provides ongoing mentorship and an on-site rotation. Dr. Selby is passionate in his approach to the program and the students. Dr. Gerard Vong has been an important colleague in our Ethics teaching at the School of Medicine and a regular guest teacher in the Genetic Counselor and PA programs. Student evaluations give high marks for his contributions. As Director of the Graduate School/Center for Ethics' MA in Bioethics program, he has taught and mentored MD/MAB dual degree students. Dr. Vong mentors through the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Medical Faculty Association Affinity Group as well as the Emory Medical Student Teaching Competition. Her impact on learners was recognized with the Division of Hospital Medicine’s Resident Teaching Award. Department of Anesthesiology Matt Whalin

Dr. Matt Whalin is an integral member of our education team at Grady for both trainees and faculty. He serves as a mentor for many of our faculty members and is always first to assist in times of need. Dr. Whalin has guided the growth of many of our trainees into faculty colleagues and has maintained a yearly role in the departmental educational mission.

Department of Medicine Richard White

Dr. Richard White is an exceptional educator whose dedication to teaching is consistently praised by residents. He keeps his team up to date on current diagnoses and treatments and is equally committed to his own learning. Dr. White creates engaging daily chalk talks that provide focused, practical learning opportunities for his team. His ability to turn clinical encounters into teachable moments makes him an invaluable part of the VA’s hospitalist program. His unwavering commitment to medical education and passion for developing learners have made a lasting impact on trainees.

Department of Family and Preventive Medicine David Wilkerson

Dr. David Wilkerson in his role as attending at EUH is dedicated to bedside teaching of trainees from multiple disciplines and is focused on teaching our residents and fellows core palliative care skills. He gets multiple compliments from residents, students and fellows on being able to teach not just to do the work but to do it efficiently and with excellence (teaching the nuts and bolts of how to be a physician on a busy service). Our fellows have consistently reported that they have never had any other attending physician not only teach the fund of knowledge needed in the specialty, but teaching them how to do the specialty on a day to day basis. Also, this past year, Dr. Wilkerson took on the role of APP Physician Co-Lead where he is leading the onboarding teaching curriculum for APP's that often do not have any advanced training in palliative care with excellent feedback from our APPs on mentoring them into the specialty.

Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Janelle Williams Holder

Dr. Janelle Holder has been a dedicated teacher and advocate in both palliative medicine and DEI. Dr. Holder has given several outstanding notable presentations this past year on race and racism in its role in medicine and the history of racism in healthcare in Atlanta all very impactful and difficult lectures to give. In her role as palliative care educator, we recently expanded efforts in hospice care at ESJH and Dr. Holder has been the education liaison with Respiratory Therapy on teaching end of life care. I received a verbal accolade on her teaching to the group.

Dr. Joel Winer is an outstanding educator. He looks for innovative methods to provide surgical teaching that helps our trainees improve their performance. Dr. Winer is also an excellent research and career development mentor for trainees.

Department of Surgery Joshua Winer

Dr. Joshua Winer is a dedicated and compassionate educator who has made a strong impact since becoming Surgery Clerkship Director in 2024. He is deeply committed to improving the student experience, mentoring those pursuing surgical careers, and teaching in the Surgery Department's intern prep course. Dr. Winer actively engages with trends in medical education, bringing fresh ideas and thoughtful innovation to his teaching. His ability to explain complex topics with clarity and foster a supportive learning environment has made him a standout mentor. Students and colleagues alike deeply value his guidance, enthusiasm, and commitment to surgical education.

Department of Neurology Daniel Winkel

Dr. Daniel Winkel has centered his career around education. Dr. Winkel is intimately involved with medical student education (directing the M2 Neuroscience course), directs the Epilepsy Fellowship (and is the APD of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship), and enjoys bedside teaching while on the inpatient Neurohospitalist service.

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Jennifer Wootten

Dr. Jennifer Wootten plans and delivers most of didactic teaching with residents over the course of their year-long rotation in outpatient psychiatry at Grady. She also teaches and supervises numerous nurse practitioners and other clinicians in her role as Medical Director of the Adult Outpatient Program. Dr. Wootten is admired and respected by colleagues and trainees. Dr. Wootten is a model for medical directors in that Dr. Wootten teaches others by example and sometimes explicitly how to work together for the benefit of patients, the team, and the healthcare system.

Department of Emergency Medicine Anna Yaffee

On the final day of a trauma and leadership skills course in Ethiopia, a female resident shared the difficulties of finding her voice and obstacles she faced. As I listened to Dr. Anna Yaffee counsel and empower the resident, I was reminded of the innumerable times she had done the same for me and others around the world. That single moment of support exemplifies Dr. Yaffee’s passion, selfless dedication to her learners, and ability to care for the whole person. These qualities set Dr. Yaffee apart as an exceptional educator and mentor who’s influence extends far beyond the. classrom.

Department of Medicine Cindy Ye

Dr. Cindy Ye is very passionate about teaching fellows in her Inflammatory Bowel Disease clinic, Endoscopy scope blocks, and fellows' continuity clinic. Dr. Ye mentors trainees in multiple successful research projects. Her teaching evaluations have been outstanding. Our GI fellows often request to be scheduled for Dr. Ye's endoscopy blocks because they love working with her to learn new endoscopy techniques and skills.

Department of Medicine Lorenzo Zaffiri

Dr. Lorenzo Zaffiri came to Emory as our new director of lung transplantation between the Emory Transplant Center and the Pulmonary Division, and he immediately created an educational campaign for residents (grand rounds), fellows (developing a transplant rotation and specific training program), faculty and the Atlanta community to improve understanding of lung transplant for all.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Wei Zheng

Dr. Wei Zheng is an incredible educator, fully committed to his trainees’ success and growth. As GI pathology rotation director, he creates a supportive environment where learners thrive. His didactic sessions are always excellent, and his teaching on grossing and diagnostic skills is highly practical. He puts tremendous effort into mentoring trainees in research, leading to their platform presentations and abstract awards at international conferences. He’s always there to guide residents in career development, from fellowship and job applications to overall professional growth. Dr. Zheng's genuine dedication to nurturing the next generation of pathologists has made him an exceptional mentor and educator.
