Junior Faculty Development Course

Course Overview

The School of Medicine is pleased to offer a ten-month career development course designed especially for junior faculty. Featuring diverse speakers selected from across Emory University, this course will present information necessary for success in an academic medical center using a variety of formats including didactic presentations, group and individual exercises, and case-based problem-solving. The next cycle will start in September 2026. Applications will open in spring 2026.

2025 Course Schedule

Topics

The Junior Faculty Development Course features sessions on the Business of Academics, Human Resources, Crucial Conversations, Presentation and Speaking Skills, Promotions, Teaching Skills, Manuscript and Grant Writing, Negotiations, Ethics, and Leadership.

Time Commitment and Structure

The course encompasses 10 sessions to be held once month from January to December 2025. Sessions will meet on Friday afternoons, for 3 or 4 hours beginning at 1:00 PM. Classes will be held in person.

Faculty accepted into the program are expected to attend all sessions. Participation in the course may also require additional time to complete any course-related work such as a self-assessment and/or pre-work. 2025 course dates:

  • January 31
  • February 28
  • March 21
  • April 25
  • May 16
  • August 15
  • September 26
  • October 24
  • November 14
  • December 12

Dates are subject to change.

Eligibility

All instructors and assistant professors in the School of Medicine.

Program Cost

The cost for each participant is $300 due upon acceptance into the course. The registration fee may be paid by the individual or department.

How to Apply

The application period for the 2025 cohort is closed. The next cycle will start in September 2026. Applications will open in spring 2026.

All interested candidates must submit an application form and CV. The application form consists of four parts:

  1. Candidate information
  2. Candidate statement of interest
  3. Candidate CV (we strongly prefer CVs in the official EUSOM template)
  4. Supporting leader information

Once the above steps are completed, the indicated leader will receive an automated request to complete the leader support form. The support form includes a commitment to providing time away for participation and an optional statement of support.

There is no limit to the number of nominations from a department, but final selections will be made to ensure diverse representation across the School of Medicine and will be limited to 25-30 individuals.
