The Emory University Department of Emergency Medicine Medical Toxicology Section is a leader in Global Medical Toxicology. Since 2008, the section has hosted international physicians who have completed an International Medical Toxicology Fellowship.
Dr. Ziad Kazzi is the Program Director for Emory Emergency Medicine's International Medical Toxicology Fellowship. He has chaired the American College of Medical Toxicology's International Committee and Section for the past 12 years, served as president, and is currently the executive director of the Middle East and North Africa Clinical Toxicology Association that organizes the annual conference and other activities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Since 2024, Dr. Kazzi has co-directed the Emory Department of Emergency Medicine's Center for Advanced Emergency Care (CAEC) which organizes an international annual conference in Atlanta. Through the CAEC, Dr. Kazzi, Dr. Brent Morgan and Jonathan De Olano offer a hybrid certificate in clinical toxicology for international physicians.
Several of the international fellowship alumni have returned to their home countries or territories to lead the development of medical toxicology as a specialty. They are happy to host our residents for rotations or conferences. These countries and territories include: Thailand, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Oman, India, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Georgia, and Lebanon.
Medical Toxicology Section Agreements
The Medical Toxicology Section has active agreements with the American University of Beirut, and the Turkish Foundation of Emergency Medicine that allow our toxicologists to provide education and technical toxicology consultation on patients presenting to their hospitals with toxicological exposures. This 24/7 telephonic consultation service provides opportunities to clinical cases that are not commonly encountered in the United States. These relationships have also galvanized the publication of numerous case reports and research studies.
Medical Toxicology Residents will have the opportunity to rotate at the Farabi Hospital in Trabzon, Turkiye as well as at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. They will also have an opportunity to participate in medical toxicology education and conference in these two countries in addition to other locations.
PLeDGE Health Partnership
Emory University Medical Toxicology Fellowship is pleased to partner with PLeDGE Health to provide innovative medical toxicology educational opportunities for the Emory Medical Toxicology Fellows. Since 2015, PLeDGE Health has partnered with the Ministry of Health and the Maputo Central Hospital to develop the nation's first-ever emergency medicine residency in Maputo, Mozambique. As PLeDGE Health moves towards expanding the impact of improved emergency care in Mozambique, PLeDGE Health has numerous opportunities for long-term engagement.
Areas where Pledge Health has been engaged include:
- Residency curriculum development
- Emergency care training for practitioners from first-responders to specialists
- Implementation of improved patient triage and patient flow revision within partner hospitals
- Providing clinical training in emergency care and triage
Emory Medical Toxicology's fellowship first started supporting the Maputo Central Hospital EM residency in 2019 when Dr. Morgan spent two weeks at the Maputo Central Hospital providing medical toxicology consultation and training for emergency medicine residents. Since that initial visit by Dr. Morgan, four of the Emory Medical Toxicology fellows have rotated at Maputo Central Hospital. Additional support activities have included delivering two Advanced Hazmat Life Support (AHLS) courses and virtually delivering Medical Toxicology core content lectures to the Maputo Central EM residents.
