About the Program
The Emory-PP R38 StARR program offers in-depth training in research fundamentals, a tailored mentored experience, and customizable research paths to support residents pursuing clinician-investigator careers.
Research Focus Areas
- Focus 1: Blood and Immune System Research
- Focus 2: Heart Research
- Focus 3: Lung and Respiratory Disease Research
Eligibility
- Emory Pediatrics or Pathology Residents (MD, DO, and MD/PhD)
- Desire to conduct research related to one of the above foci
- Motivation to add an additional residency year primarily dedicated to research

Program Requirements and Additional Learning Opportunities
Requirements
- Attend initial intake and mentor matching appointment; attend mid-year check-in appointments with R38 Program Directors
- Create an Individual Research Plan with research mentor. Update and submit your IDP to Program Directors every 6 months.
- Form a Scholarship Oversight Committee, with regular scheduled check-ins.
- Maintain 80% attendance for all required curriculum sessions, unless otherwise excused in advance by Program Directors
- Complete at minimum 2 items individualized curriculum opportunities (list provided by program) AND complete a formal Responsible Conduct of Research Course.
- Participate in a Grant Writing Bootcamp
- Take 12–18 months of research electives over the 4 years (Peds) / 5 years (Path) of residency. For example, a Peds resident might have 3 months in PGY 2, 6 months in PGY 3, and 9 months in PGY 4.
- Submit to a funding opportunity, like the Buchter Resident Research Award. Prepare or begin preparing a K38 application in PGY4 (Peds) / PGY5 (Path).
- Complete at least 2 oral or poster presentations, which may include 1 work-in-progress presentation given at an R38 Curriculum Session. At least one of these presentations should be as part of the Physician Scientist Symposium.
- Submit a manuscript for publications.
- Apply to Fellowship
- Complete exit interview
