Description
This 2-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program is directed by Dr. Stewart G. Neill and is centered on comprehensive training in surgical neuropathology, with available additional fulsome exposure to autopsy, neurodegenerative, neuromuscular, and ophthalmic pathology. Completion of the two year fellowship leads to board eligibility following an AP or AP/CP program.
Activities are based at Emory University Hospital, where cases are reviewed from throughout the Emory system as well as from our consultation service. Together, the hospitals provide a large case volume, including approximately 1300 surgical neuropathology cases per year and a substantial volume of intraoperative consultations. Surgical cases at Emory also receive a broad-spectrum genomic workup, including next-generation sequencing, chromosomal microarray, and DNA methylation profiling with dedicated weekly integrated molecular neuropathology consensus meetings. Two of our faculty members, Drs. Matthew Schniederjan and Jose Velazquez, are also attending neuropathologists at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, providing for additional training in pediatric and developmental neuropathology.
The core of the fellowship schedule revolves around surgical neuropathology, with concurrent exposure to neuromuscular and neurodegenerative neuropathology. Fellows have also pursued elective opportunities focused on specific topics or specialized research in neuropathology. Clinical electives have taken place within Emory’s specialized laboratories, such as the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center or in the L. F. Montgomery Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory, as well as at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Emory features an active research community across the neurosciences, including within its Winship Cancer Institute and the Emory Brain Health Center.
Neuropathology fellows also have excellent opportunities to engage in teaching through their participation in daily signout as well as in departmental and interdepartmental conferences.
