Cytopathology Fellowship

This 1-year ACGME-accredited program offers training in diagnostic exfoliative cytopathology and fine needle aspiration. Upon completion fellows are board-eligible in Cytopathology and capable of practicing in both academic and private practice settings.

Activities are centered at Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital-Midtown, where fellows are exposed to a wide range of cytology material. The combined annual volume of cytology specimens between these sites is over 45,000,including over 30,000 gynecologic cytology specimens and 11,000 non-gynecologic specimens, 4,200 of which are fine needle aspirations of superficial and deep lesions.

Fellows train with fifteen board-certified and highly experienced faculty and develop increasingly independent diagnostic abilities, participate in rapid onsite evaluations, are trained in telecytology, and perform and interpret fine needle aspirations. Training in ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration is also provided. Fellows also plan and participate in intradepartmental and interdepartmental conferences and instruct pathology residents and medical students. Resources available for clinical and translational research include faculty with expertise in multiple subspecialties as well as trainee access to laboratory facilities, digital pathology, immunocytochemistry, flow and image cytometry and molecular diagnostics.

The selection process for prospective fellows for Cytopathology will be through the NRMP Pathology Fellowship Match for the 2028-29 academic year.

• Virtual interviews will be offered from January 4, 2027, through March 26, 2027
• Match day is April 28, 2027, at noon EST
