Facilitated by Francois Rollin, MD and Vanessa Van Doren, MD, and featuring Otis Brawley, MD, Alanna Morris, MD, and Michael Kramer, PhD, the Appropriate Use of Race in Research Town Hall encouraged participants to explore how is race utilized, reported, and interpreted in biomedical research. This important discussion considered whether the use of race as a variable in clinical research is practical or problematic and how investigators can responsibly participate in health equity scholarship that leads to meaningful change.
Actionable Education Initiatives
Several DOM faculty are collaborating with others across the School of Medicine on the Actionable Education Initiative. This initiative invites the entire School of Medicine to listen, learn and act to move from awareness of internal biases and external forces of marginalization and oppression into learning about their historical and psychological origins and effects and on to growing into anti-racist allies who actively work for and prize diversity, equity and inclusion. This program is offered by the Office of Equity and Inclusion and uses over 30 certified implicit bias facilitators who engage with session participants to explain the impact implicit bias has on workplace decision-making, the concept of microaggressions, and how to mitigate bias in research, education and practice.
