Who we are and how we serve

The Office of Multicultural Affairs is comprised of professionals in the field of diversity and inclusion in medical education in the areas of admissions and recruitment, learner development and support, pipeline development, and community outreach, who set the standard for providing valuable services. We are an integral part of the School of Medicine’s educational mission and diversity and inclusion strategic vision.

Emory University School of Medicine created the Office of Multicultural Medical Student Affairs in 1986 to increase minority representation in medicine and biomedical research. In 2019, the office changed its name to the Office of Multicultural Affairs to be more inclusive of all School of Medicine learners.

The Office provides programs to support the development and matriculation of diverse learners, which include medical students, health professions students (Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Genetic Counseling, Anesthesiologist Assistant, and Medical Imaging), Graduate Medical Education trainees (residents and fellows), and K-12 students interested in health professions.

Recruitment and Admissions

We recruit and support the admission of diverse learners by expanding our applicant pool to include strong candidates, traditionally underrepresented in medicine (URiM) who reflect the diverse community in Atlanta and the patients we serve.

Events and Programs for Prospective Applicants

We implement recruitment strategies to grow the diversity of learners in the School of Medicine and sessions for pre-medical undergraduate learners through Emory Premedical Readiness Engagement Program (EmPREP).

We also represent Emory School of Medicine programs at national and regional conferences and events targeted to URiM applicants.

Interview Day Discussions

Our office collaborates with Admissions for degree programs, and Graduate Medical Education programs to meet with candidates on interview days to discuss our office, programs, and support for underrepresented learners.

Recruitment Events for Applicants

We support opportunities for URiMs candidates to learn about EUSOM and to connect with other applicants, current learners, and faculty through programs such as Emory Revisited for accepted URiM MD applicants. We also support leadership in the development of a "second look" within our Health Professions and GME programs.

Learner Development, Engagement, and Support

We support the cultural, academic, and professional development of learners at the School of Medicine.

Mentoring and Professional Development

We provide URiM SOM learners with professional development seminars, mentorship with staff, faculty, and alumni through our programs.

Learner Support

We foster a culture of inclusion in which learners experience a genuine sense of belonging, engagement, and achievement through educational workshops, cultural and social events, and opportunities for learners to express their concerns to encourage exploration and continual learning and engagement in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
