The recent advances in clinical molecular genetic testing technology that have revolutionized the practice of medical genetics are also applicable to the realm of adult medicine. The Emory Department of Human Genetics is proud to have established an Adult Genetics Clinic.
The most common causes of referral for adult genetics include familial hyperlipidemia, familial thoracic aneurysm and aortic dissection (TAAD), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, neuromuscular disorders, early-onset dementia, movement disorders, inborn errors of metabolism including lysosomal storage disorders, and retinal disorders.
An evaluation by a geneticist or genetic counselor can help guide you through the process of considering genetic testing, understand the implications for your treatment, and those for your family. With the recent advances in enzyme replacement therapy, gene therapy, and the continually evolving understanding of rare genetic conditions, identifying if your disease can be traced back to a single gene has become an integral part of clinical care.
Other reasons for referral to adult genetics include:
- Continued follow-up for individuals who have known genetic syndromes with onset in childhood
- Individuals who were seen as children and do not have a definitive diagnosis, but have not had an opportunity to be tested using newer technologies such as SNP microarray and next-generation sequencing
New Adult Patient Packet
Please print and complete the new adult patient packet before your genetics appointment.
Please send completed forms and medical records at least two weeks in advance to allow physicians and counselors time to evaluate the information and to expedite the appointment process.
