What is the Down Syndrome Clinic?
The Down Syndrome Clinic is comprised of a multidisciplinary team that focuses on providing quality, evidence-based care to individuals with Down syndrome. The clinic team aids families in acquiring specialized and personal care for their child provides current medical and developmental guidelines, refer families to resources in their community and region, and serves as a liaison to educate the community on the strengths and abilities of people with Down syndrome.
What professionals are part of the Down Syndrome Clinic?
The clinic team includes physicians and staff who have extensive experience in genetics and development with an emphasis on the needs of individuals with Down syndrome and their families. On our team, we have Dr. Amy Talboy who serves as the medical director of the clinic. She is a neurodevelopmental pediatrician who specializes in developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and X and Y chromosome variations.
Hailey Dennis serves as the genetic counselor and coordinator for the clinic. Jean Luan McColl is the clinical research coordinator.
What other services are available through the Down Syndrome Clinic?
After your child’s appointment, referrals may be made to other specialists including Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Neurology, Hematology/Oncology, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, and Pulmonary. In addition, the clinic can assist patients in accessing necessary services of social work, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, nutrition counseling, educational/behavioral counseling, and audiology.
How will the Down Syndrome Clinic work with my child’s primary care physician?
After each appointment we will send a summary letter to you and your child's primary care doctor reviewing what was discussed during your appointment and any recommendations that we have.
Does insurance cover the visit?
Your child’s appointment with the Down Syndrome Clinic at Emory may be covered, depending on your insurance plan. It is important for us to receive the necessary referrals from your primary care doctor and authorizations from your insurance prior to your appointment. We can help you with this process at the time your appointment is made.
How long does an appointment last?
New patient appointments can last 90 minutes or more depending on the needs of the patient. Please plan on arriving 15 minutes prior to your designated appointment time.
