Scheduling the Appointment

New Patients

To schedule a new patient appointment:

  • Please have your primary care doctor or another doctor send in a referral.
  • We also ask that you fill out a questionnaire to provide us some basic information enabling us to prepare for your appointment.

Returning Patients 

Please call our 404-778-8570 and request a follow-up appointment in the Down Syndrome Clinic, Emory Department of Human Genetics

What to Bring to the Appointment

  1. NICU discharge summary
  2. Reports/notes from other medical specialists involved in your child’s care
  3. Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) for children under three years of age
  4. Individualized Education Program (IEP) for children over three years of age
  5. Previous developmental and/or psychological evaluation reports
  6. Most recent therapy reports


During the Visit

  1. Your child’s weight, height, temperature, and blood pressure will be taken.
  2. The genetic counselor will review your child’s chromosomal studies, health history, family history, and discuss the genetics of Down syndrome with you.
  3. Dr. Amy Talboy will review the information provided to the genetic counselor, do a physical exam, perform a developmental and behavioral assessment, discuss medical management, provide recommendations for appropriate developmental interventions, and answer any questions you may have.
  4. Referrals may be made to other medical specialists to supplement your child’s care.


After the Visit

  1. You and your child’s pediatrician will receive a copy of your clinic note and any recommendations to monitor your child’s health.
  2. Management of your child’s condition will occur through the Down Syndrome Clinic at Emory and your current team of primary and specialty physicians.
  3. We are available to you and your physicians to answer any Down syndrome-related questions.
  4. We will notify you of patient education opportunities and meetings sponsored by the Down Syndrome Clinic at Emory.
