Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics

Advancing Expertise in Surgical Care for Complex Gynecologic Conditions

The Division of Complex Benign Gynecologic Surgery (CBGS), formerly known as Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS), represents Emory’s commitment to advancing the surgical management of benign yet complex gynecologic conditions. Our faculty brings deep clinical experience, specialized surgical training, and a strong commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care, anchored in the belief that complexity should not be a barrier to minimally invasive options.

About the Division

CBGS encompasses the diagnosis, evaluation, and surgical treatment of non-cancerous gynecologic conditions that often require advanced expertise and individualized planning. Our faculty are trained in the latest minimally invasive techniques—including laparoscopy, robotic-assisted surgery, hysteroscopy, and vNOTES—offering patients shorter recovery times, less pain, and improved outcomes even in cases complicated by comorbidities or prior surgeries.

In addition to clinical excellence, our division prioritizes scholarly activity, surgical innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our surgeons are active in clinical research and regularly contribute to national conversations on surgical education, quality improvement, and emerging technologies in gynecologic surgery.

Areas of Clinical and Research Expertise

We treat a broad range of benign gynecologic conditions including:

  • Endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain
  • Uterine fibroids and myomas
  • Müllerian anomalies and uterine anomalies
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding and Asherman’s Syndrome
  • Ovarian cysts and adnexal masses
  • Cesarean scar defects
  • Tubal pathologies (e.g., hydrosalpinx, removal of swollen tubes)
  • Infertility-related structural issues
  • Pelvic adhesions and intrauterine scar tissue

Our surgeons specialize in individualized care plans that balance the best available evidence with each patient’s reproductive goals, medical history, and quality-of-life considerations.

Training & Collaboration

The division plays a vital role in the education of Emory’s medical students, OB/GYN residents, and subspecialty fellows. Our team emphasizes surgical mentorship, exposure to advanced technologies, and participation in ongoing research and quality initiatives. We welcome collaborative opportunities across departments and institutions in the areas of research, clinical innovation, and complex case referrals.
