Mission
The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM) is committed to fostering an environment grounded in fairness, belonging, and justice, and to embedding these principles across all areas of our work. To support this commitment, DFPM has established a Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Council, with the primary goal of integrating these values into patient care, education, research, and professional development. This ensures that inclusive practices are part of our daily operations and interactions. These efforts are essential to upholding the integrity of our Department’s clinical and educational missions, as well as our personal and collective responsibilities. Through concrete actions, the Council works to ensure that DFPM is a place where all faculty, staff, and trainees feel respected, supported, and able to thrive.
Values
The Department values the strength that comes from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives among our faculty and staff. Fostering an environment that embraces this breadth enhances patient care, drives impactful research, inspires innovative education, and supports the retention of exceptional team members. Grounding our efforts in principles of fairness, belonging, and accountability—through clear, measurable actions—brings us closer to our highest aspirations. With broad representation through the Justice and Inclusion Council, the Department will continue to engage in faculty and staff development, mentorship, education, scholarship, research, quality improvement, advocacy, and patient-centered care to advance these goals. Recognizing and honoring the unique identities and lived experiences of our colleagues and patients—including, but not limited to, differences in age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, socioeconomic background, and perspectives—is fundamental to who we are.
