The Emory Office of Postdoctoral and Mentored Trainee Education has created the OPMTE Grants Toolkit
The OPMTE Grants Toolkit is designed to provide Emory postdocs with the information you need to successfully find, write and submit grant proposals. The Toolkit is a living resource, with resources and information continuously updated and expanded.
The OPMTE Grants Toolkit has three primary modules:
- Grants 101: Education resources start with the Grants 101 module – This introductory module covers everything you need to know about grants for postdocs: why you should apply for grants, how to find grants, what kind of grants postdocs can apply for, how to decide what funding to apply for, getting started with grant writing, and setting up a timeline for submitting a grant application.
- The Anatomy of a Grant Application – All research grant applications have certain elements in common regardless of the funding agency. This module covers 1) grant application terminology, 2) Common elements in research grant applications, 3) How to write the difference sections of a research grant. Common elements in fellowship grant applications are also described.
- F32 Bootcamp: This module addresses all sections of the F32 application. Postdoctoral fellows planning to submit an F32 proposal should work through this module 3-12 months before submission.
You can access information in the OPMTE Grants Toolkit in multiple different ways –
- OPMTE Grants Scholarblog is the home of the OPMTE Grants. You can subscribe to get notifications of posts, access asynchronous recordings, get access to PDFs of slide sets, and get the answers to frequently asked questions.
- 1-on-1 Assistance is available. All you have to do is ask Becky Kinkead. ‘Office hours’ are continuous and a call or Zoom can be arranged as needed. Examples of successfully funded grants are available upon request. Feedback can be provided for any grant document.

NIH K Awards Tutorial
Course Instructor: Dr. Janet Gross
In anticipation of the grant deadlines for the NIH K Career Development Award for new proposals (and resubmission proposals), the Office of Postdoctoral Education offers the “NIH K Grant Writing Tutorial”.
What will be coveredThe series will address the following K Award categories: K01, K07, K08, K22, K23, K25, K99/00 as well as VA CDA and other career development awards. The classes will include didactic presentation, discussion, and Q&A. Time permitting, Dr. Janet Gross will provide an individual read and review of your proposal.
When and where(This is a 2 class series, attending both is highly recommended): Dates and locations will be announced in the newsletter prior to the registration opening for the course.
Who should attend?- This series is open to all Postdocs, Instructors, Assistant Professors (and equivalent).
- Candidates submitting revised (A1) proposals for the next K deadline may attend.
- Please note that the K99 has no US citizenship restriction. Additionally, K99 application must be submitted before reaching your 4-year anniversary (start date) as Postdoc. This is an extremely competitive application. The overall success rate for all NIH Institutes / Centers in 2017 was 23.4%.
- If you are planning to submit a grant proposal, you should plan to attend this tutorial at least 6-9 months prior to the submission deadline! We have learned from experience (over 160 grants submitted by students in our program) that early planning is a key to success.
- We are happy to have candidates who are planning for any kind of NIH K, VA CDA, or other Career Development or Young Investigator award.
