Visiting Residents

Emory Graduate Medical Education welcomes and offers visiting resident electives from other institutions for short-term rotations in a broad array of elective rotations that foster growth of medical knowledge through patient care.

Emory GME accepts visiting residents from Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency and fellowship programs in the United States. Georgia State Law requires medical trainees (visiting residents) to hold an active Georgia Physician's License or Georgia Residency Training Permit. The GME Office is unable to sponsor J-1 visas for visiting residents.

Applying for a Visiting Resident Rotation

  • Acceptance of the individual application is at the discretion of the Program Director.
  • Contact the individual training program to confirm that they are currently accepting visiting residents and fellows.
  • Once confirmed, submit the completed and signed application to the individual training program.

Visiting Resident Rotation Process

  • The Emory Program Coordinator must initiate the visiting resident process ninety (90) days in advance of the rotation start date to avoid delays.
  • If accepted for a rotation, the Emory Program Coordinator will forward your application to the Graduate Medical Education Office for processing.
  • Once received, the Graduate Medical Education Office will provide the visiting resident with additional instructions on how to complete the request.
  • The visiting resident will be required to submit the following information upon approval of the elective rotation:
    • Letter of good standing from current Program Director
    • CV
    • Certificate of Insurance
    • Copy of medical school diploma
    • ECFMG certificate, if applicable
    • Current immunization documentation:

      • Influenza
      • COVID-19
    • BLS/ACLS Certification
