Movement is critical for health and quality of life. Inadequate physical activity is a primary factor in the explosive growth of chronic, noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Increasing movement and decreasing sedentary behaviors are important methods to improve the overall health of individuals and society.
The Emory University Center for Physical Therapy and Movement Science brings together a community of movement science researchers, educators and clinicians from across Emory Healthcare, Emory University School of Medicine and external partners including the Shepherd Center, Veteran Affairs Medical Center and Georgia Institute of Technology to facilitate research, advance education and enhance clinical practice.
We envision incorporating a precision rehabilitation model founded on the concept of movement as medicine that incorporates humanistic artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to promote a Learning Healthcare system that links patient-specific care and movement/rehabilitation research in an ongoing and iterative process. In this model, clinical care generates new knowledge which fuels rigorous research, and the findings of these studies can then be implemented to improve clinical care and community engagement.
