The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences provides numerous resources to support faculty members in the promotion and tenure process.
- Mentors can assist faculty members in meeting the benchmarks for scholarship, teaching and professional service
- The Faculty Development Committee hosts an annual seminar related to the promotion process
- These are in addition to the excellent promotion workshop series sponsored by the School of Medicine (SOM)
- The Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Assistant Vice Chair for Faculty Development – Appointments, Promotions and Clinical Distinctions are available to
- meet with faculty to determine their readiness for promotion and/or tenure
- meet regularly with faculty members preparing their materials for appointment, promotion or tenure to provide guidance and detailed feedback, which can help ensure faculty members are well-prepared to advance in their career trajectories
- Audrey Kelly will help faculty members in the process of pursuing appointment, promotion or tenure get scheduled to attend the appropriate SOM Packet Class
The Guidelines for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure at Emory University School of Medicine inform all appointment, promotion and tenure decisions. These guidelines provide general benchmarks for scholarship, teaching, and professional service as pertinent to each rank, area of distinction, and tenure/non-tenure status and offer information about the evaluations required (i.e., number, external/internal, arm’s-length/non-arm’s length) for each rank and tenure status. They also detail the procedures for appointment and promotion.
All appointment, promotion, and tenure packets must be prepared in accord with the official SOM templates, which can be found here. Additional materials are provided to each faculty member in the department as they begin the process of preparing their packets.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences develops its own promotion timelines (based on the SOM timelines) due to our internal review process.
Once submitted to the department, all appointment, promotion and tenure packages are reviewed by the Department’s Appointment and Promotion Committee, which consists of the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Assistant Vice Chair for Faculty Development – Appointments, Promotions and Clinical Distinctions, as well as faculty at the rank of both Associate Professor and Professor, with and without tenure, who represent each of the three areas of distinction (scholarship, teaching, professional service).
