The Emory Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has a large and actively engaged cadre of adjunct faculty members. These individuals make invaluable contributions to the department through teaching and supervising a diverse array of learners in the department, providing direct clinical care, collaborating on research and other scholarly endeavors and participating in a range of department-related service activities including committees. A list of adjunct faculty members in the department can be found here.
The department’s Adjunct Faculty Workgroup meets quarterly, welcomes new individuals to the adjunct faculty, hosts an annual adjunct faculty gathering and serves as a liaison between the adjunct faculty and the department leadership. They also sponsor two awards for adjunct faculty members: Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Member Award and the Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Member Community Service Award. Here is the roster for the Adjunct Faculty Workgroup.
One of the Adjunct Faculty Workgroup’s initiatives is to highlight adjunct faculty members who have made major contributions to the department throughout the course of their careers.
- Susan McCarthy Furman, PhD - A dedicated clinical psychologist and educator, she has been shaped by early experiences of service, cultural humility and behavioral science, leading to a career marked by impactful work in mental health, supervision and advocacy. Her legacy includes decades of mentorship, innovative training contributions at Emory and Georgia State Universities, ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and community activism.
- Larry Giustra, MD - In a thoughtful retrospective, adjunct faculty member Larry Giustra, MD, reflects on his journey as a long-serving educator in our department. Tracing his formative experiences at Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts General Hospital and Grady Hospital through to private practice and decades of teaching psychotherapy to residents, he offers insights, inspiration and enduring guidance for current and future psychiatrists.
Adjunct faculty members typically begin at the rank of Adjunct Assistant Professor. Those individuals who make significant contributions to the department and their profession locally, regionally and/or nationally can be promoted to the ranks of Adjunct Associate Professor and Adjunct Professor. Here is the roster for the Adjunct Faculty Promotions Committee, as well as the Adjunct Appointment and Promotions Guidelines.
