Innovative Curricula

Bite-Sized Teaching (BST) is an instructional approach that incorporates bite-sized learning principles and peer teaching. BST utilizes multiple, focused talks given by learners and delivered within the resident curriculum. The result is replacing a 40 to 50- min teaching session with 4 to 5 brief (8 min) teaching micro-sessions created and delivered by learners. This article in BMC Medical Education by GIM faculty was recently named one of the top 10 most impactful in medical education by the Society for General Internal Medicine.

Primary Care Track

Emory's Primary Care Track is something special. Listen to faculty and residents explain what sets this program apart.

The School of Medicine’s Community Learning and Social Medicine program was developed by GIM faculty. This four-year structured learning experience combines community service with preparation, action and reflection. Learners work with over 50 community-based organizations/partners focused on one of four underserved or disadvantaged populations including elderly, disabled, economically disadvantaged, and immigrant/refugee populations.



Excellence in Teaching

GIM faculty regularly participate as both trainees and mentors in competitive national training and leadership programs such as SGIM TEACH (Teaching Educators Across the Continuum of Healthcare) and LEAHP (Leadership in Health Policy), AAMC Early Career and Mid-Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Program, AAMC Minority Faculty Development Program, Presidential Leadership Scholars Program, Stanford Faculty Development Center Program for Medical Teachers, Macy Faculty Scholars Program, and Climate and Health Equity Fellowship Program.

In addition, they are regular participants and mentors in Emory programs such as Woodruff Health Educators Academy, Learning to Be Better Teachers conference, and Medical Education Day.

GIM faculty have been recognized with many teaching awards from Emory. Since 2009, six of the Evangeline T. Papageorge Distinguished Teaching Awardees have been faculty in the Grady section of the division of General Internal Medicine: Twelve GIM faculty have received the Dean’s Teaching Award in the past 20 years. GIM faculty have also received the Exemplary Teacher Award, the Distinguished Service Award, the Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award, the Mentoring Award, the Juha Kokko Teaching Award, The Golden Stethoscope Award, and the Grady Golden Apple Award.

Emory GIM faculty have also received state, regional, and national awards for excellence in education.
