Each year, as part of School of Medicine Researcher Appreciation Day, the Emory School of Medicine Faculty Recognitions Committee allows for nominating colleagues performing groundbreaking research. Once the committee reviews all nominations, the final honorees are recognized throughout the broader Emory community. This year, the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics saw four faculty members recognized.
- Dr. Carolynn Dude, with our Maternal Fetal Medicine, was recognized for her continued effort to understand better how pregnant mothers and their infants are affected by infectious diseases, including COVID-19.
- Dr. Anne Dunlop, with our Research Division, works on stress and maternal and infant outcomes, which is essential for understanding the societal impact on maternal and child health. She is interested in understanding the differences between racial groups and the movement to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in communities.
- Dr. Lisa Flowers, with our Gynecologic Oncology Division, has shown that advanced screening and treatment of precancerous lesions reduce cancer risk for people with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). For her pioneering work and leadership, Dr. Flowers is the current President of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.
- Dr. Heather Hipp, with our Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Division, is a recognized national expert on fragile-X premutation and resultant ovarian failure. She often publishes in high-impact journals, including a recent paper in JAMA detailing trends and outcomes for pre-implantation genetic testing in the US. She collaborates with researchers in her division, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and Rollins.
For more than 75 years, Emory Gynecology and Obstetrics has been a regional and national leader in sexual and reproductive healthcare service delivery, education, and research. The vision set for the department aims for it to be a leading institution for addressing disparities and promoting health equity in sexual and reproductive healthcare provision. This involves a variety of scientific approaches, from basic science to population health, emphasizing health services research and implementation science.
James Robert McCord Professor and Chair Denise Jamieson, MD, MPH, congratulated the recognized faculty for their accomplishments.
“Congratulations to the department’s faculty recognized in this year’s School of Medicine Researcher Appreciation Day. I am thrilled for the broader Emory community to get a deeper look into the commitment of our faculty to conduct innovative research ranging from basic science to population health and to integrate knowledge resulting from that research into practice. Our department has always focused on training the next generation of outstanding clinicians, surgeons, researchers, teachers, advocates, and leaders in our field. This recognition of our faculty research is one more way we deliver on that commitment.”
