Admissions Process

How to Apply

Applicants to the MD/PhD Program should apply directly to Emory University School of Medicine through AMCAS. The AMCAS application can be submitted between June 1st and October 15th, though applicants are encouraged to submit their applications early, preferably in the summer. Application packets may be obtained either from the health care professions advisor or the appropriate office at the applicant's school, or from AAMC.

Upon receipt of the AMCAS application, an Emory Supplemental Application Form, including an application to the MD/PhD Program, will be e-mailed to each applicant. For additional information, feel free to Email the program.

MD/PhD applicants are required to submit their Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores in accordance with the admissions policies of the School of Medicine. Generally, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are not required for most programs as the MCAT exam is seen as adequate, however, some non-traditional MD/PhD disciplines may require it.

Applications from international students are accepted. If interviewed and accepted, international students receive the same scholarship package as domestic students, a competitive stipend, and tuition waiver.

Application Review, Interviews, and Admissions Decisions

After applications are received by the Medical School Admissions Office, those marked MD/PhD are then sent to the MD/PhD Program Office for review. All MD/PhD applications are reviewed in their entirety by a team of reviewers. Those deemed most suitable are subsequently selected for interview. Applicants selected for interview are notified by email. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Program for information regarding the status of their applications. Interviews for the MD/PhD Program are typically held virtually on three two-day sessions during the medical school interview season. The 2025-2026 MD/PhD interview dates are September 25-26, November 13-14, and February 5-6.

Interviews occur over two days and include meetings with medical school, graduate school and MD/PhD program faculty. Interviewing applicants can expect to have 6-8 one-on-one interviews over the two-day period as well as many opportunities to interact with our current students, who serve as virtual hosts.

After interviewing, applicants will be notified of their status within a few weeks of the interview. Acceptance offers will be issued after the final interview session in February. Accepted applicants will receive an official letter from the MD/PhD Program and an acceptance packet from the Emory School of Medicine Admissions Office with all the necessary materials for matriculation to the medical school.

Revisit: The Revisit event allows admitted students to visit our campus, meet program faculty and students, learn first-hand about the Atlanta area, and even make housing arrangements. This event typically takes place in late March.

Per AAMC "traffic rules," candidates may only hold one admission offer after April 30th.

Matriculation

The deadline for making a final decision on matriculation is May 1st. The decision to accept an offer of admission must be communicated to both the School of Medicine through a form included in the acceptance packet and a separate written statement of intent to the MD/PhD Program Office, which may be emailed.

The MD/PhD Annual Retreat is required for all students, including the rising first year class, and is a great forum in which to welcome new students. The Retreat is generally held soon after the new M1 class arrives.
