We study interactions between the brain and the immune system, especially as they relate to the effects of inflammation on the development of psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. We also study the impact of inflammation on the brain in medically ill patients including patients with cancer. Special emphasis in our studies is placed on the effects of inflammation on neurotransmitter systems involving dopamine and glutamate, as well as the integrity of local and regional brain networks. Finally, we are exploring a variety of treatment strategies that target the immune system to treat psychiatric disorders. By combining multiple frames of reference, we believe novel approaches to human suffering can be achieved through strategies that address both brain and immune aspects of health and illness.
