PGY 1-2 Curriculum

PGY 1-2: In the first two years of training, the participant will be a resident with the Department of Pediatrics Residency Program.

Intern year focuses on improving information synthesis and medical decision-making. First-year residents hone their skills during 3 months of inpatient General Pediatrics and 3 months of inpatient Subspecialty services. They learn to deliver high acuity care during ED and NICU rotations, develop a greater facility with issues of growth and development during their Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics rotation, and learn how to diagnose and manage common neuropsychiatric issues in Mental and Behavioral Health rotation.

Second-year residents spend 2 months each in the PICU, NICU, and ED to further cultivate their abilities managing high acuity patients. They also assume supervisory responsibilities on subspecialty services and General Pediatrics night team rotations and learn to be career advocates for children during the Community rotation. With the support of faculty mentors they begin to tailor their training through the creation of an individual curriculum.

PGY 3 Curriculum

During the PGY 3 year, the resident will transition to the Neurology program. The residents complete 9 months of adult neurology wards (consult service, stroke service, Neuro-ICU) and outpatient clinics at Grady Health System and Emory University Hospital. They have 2 months with the pediatric neurology inpatient consult service. Finally, there is one month of pediatric electrophysiology.

PGY 4 Curriculum

During the PGY 4 year, the neurology resident will complete five months on the inpatient consult service, one month of subspecialty outpatient pediatric neurology clinics at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital, Scottish Rite, and Executive Park campuses. In addition, there will be rotations with the pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, Pediatric Genetics service and Pediatric Neuroradiology service. There are two months of elective time focused on pediatric neurology and one month for adult neurology.

PGY 5 Curriculum

The PGY 5 year is primarily focused on elective rotations planned at the discretion of the resident with input from the program director. Four months are for pediatric neurology and 2 months are for adult neurology. These electives can be used for a variety of electives within neurology such as neurophysiology, spasticity, epilepsy, neuromuscular, or sleep medicine. Customized electives focused on, for example, neurosurgery, physiatry, or neuro-oncology can be arranged. The residents are encouraged and supported in their efforts to pursue original research projects, which can be completed during these electives as well. There are 3 months spent on the inpatient consult service with the goal to have the senior resident have as much autonomy as possible. Finally, two months of neuropathology (1 month each adult and pediatric), one month on the Child Psychiatry service round out the year.
