Program Information

The Emory Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a comprehensive one-year training program that enrolls four fellows annually. The program is designed to develop excellence in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sleep disorders. Fellows receive clinical training across multiple sites, including Emory Healthcare, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and the Atlanta VA Health Care System, with exposure to a wide range of specialties such as Obesity Medicine, Surgical Sleep Medicine, Behavioral Sleep Medicine, and Dental Sleep Medicine.
The program emphasizes hands-on experience in polysomnography interpretation, sleep center administration, and patient care, while also encouraging involvement in scholarly research. Fellows are supported by faculty mentorship to complete original research projects, with the goal of fostering academic growth and contributing to the advancement of sleep medicine.
Weekly didactic conferences and collaborative learning opportunities ensure continued development in both clinical and research domains.
Clinical Training

Clinical training takes place at three sites across the Emory campus and Atlanta area locations:
For each outpatient clinic, the fellow will see patients under the appropriate supervision of a faculty member. The fellows have a continuity clinic at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. The fellow will have ample time to read sleep studies and home sleep apnea tests and will be able to participate in the interpretation of those studies performed on his/her patients, as well as patients not specifically designated to a fellow.
Fellows will also rotate through ENT (hypoglossal nerve stimulation suite), Obesity Medicine, Behavioral Sleep Medicine, and Dental Sleep Medicine services.
Research Training

At Emory University’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program, our fellows are committed to advancing the field through research and scholarly work. We emphasize the importance of evidence-based practices and the exploration of innovative approaches to sleep disorders.
The primary goal of the research experience is to help fellows develop the intellectual skills needed to perform scholarly work. Fellows may choose to develop an original research project under the guidance of their mentor, learning how to analyze data, prepare and deliver scientific presentations, and write and publish original scientific manuscripts. Research topics often focus on clinical indications, patient outcomes, and the evolving landscape of sleep disorder treatments.
All fellows are encouraged to meet with a variety of potential research mentors during their clinical rotations. While it is strongly recommended that fellows choose a member of the Emory Sleep Center faculty as their primary mentor, in some cases, they may work with external mentors who have established collaborative relationships with our faculty.
Our fellows regularly present their original research at prestigious national meetings, including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) annual conference. They have also contributed to the scientific community through publications in high-impact journals such as CHEST, Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (JCSM), and Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports. Notably, one fellow has published original research in Journal of Neurological Science and a review article in Current Sleep Medicine Reports, both developed during our fellowship.
In addition to original research, fellows may engage in other academic pursuits such as writing review papers, book chapters, or case reports; performing meta-analyses; collaborating on ongoing studies; or conducting retrospective reviews using sleep center or other databases. Each fellow is expected to complete at least one scholarly project during their fellowship.
