The division has unique strengths in the areas of pituitary diseases, metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis, nutrition and lipid metabolism, thyroid diseases, and diabetes. Fellows rotate to through Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Grady Health System, Atlanta VA Medical Center. We offer several electives including nuclear medicine, reproductive endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology. Each fellow receives funds to travel to a national endocrine meeting yearly.
Fellows receive continuous feedback throughout the year with semi-annual meetings with the program director, an annual in-service written examination, thyroid biopsy simulation, and 360 examinations.
Program Information
First Year
First-year fellows will have between 3-9 clinical months depending upon career track. Fellows will spend time at each major hospital on the endocrine consultation service and have a weekly endocrinology continuity clinic. Fellows will also have some opportunities for electives in their first year.
Second Year
Second-year fellows will have between 3-9 clinical months depending on career track. Fellows will continue their weekly endocrine continuity clinic, and will also have additional time for research. Fellows will have opportunities for electives.
Third Year (Optional Research Track)
If pursued, the 3rd year fellow will continue with a weekly continuity clinic and spend 2-4 months in some clinical activity with the rest of the time dedicated for research. The goal of this year is to develop research skills necessary for a junior faculty member dedicated to research.
Research Experience
Active participation in clinical and/or laboratory research projects is an essential part of the training program. Clinical track fellows will be assigned a research mentor who will help the fellow design a research project that can be completed within the two year time period. Research track fellows will work with a research mentor who will help design a research program over a three year period. Research track fellows will be required to submit a grant proposal for external funding by the end of their second year of fellowship.
Objectives for research training include:
- Execution of a research project under direction of faculty mentor
- Understand the pertinent research literature
- Present data from research experience at a national meeting

Fellowship applicants must have an MD, have completed a U.S. residency in Internal Medicine, and be eligible to take the ABIM board exam in internal medicine. Applications are accepted only through the ERAS.
