My inspiration to pursue medicine stemmed from witnessing family members and our larger community in West Africa and the diaspora suffer from preventable diseases and deaths due to inadequate access to healthcare. Therefore, I had a goal of serving underserved populations while at the same time providing holistic healthcare to individual patients. I was a medical assistant who served medically underserved refugee, immigrant, and Spanish-speaking populations. Further, I helped start a nonprofit organization with my family, Mission Sierra Inc. aimed at building dental and medical clinics in Waterloo, Sierra Leone. The more I worked in family medicine, I fell in love with the communal nature of primary care. I am drawn to the familiarity of the individual patient and the larger communities. The passion within me blossomed from the fulfillment of a continued relationship with both.
I chose Emory's family medicine program based on their diverse patient population and the opportunities and resources Emory provides their resident physicians with to serve them. I believed this characteristic would help me discover new ways to adapt and deliver care to various patient populations. Moreover, the faculty and residents' diversity reflect the diverse population they serve. The culture that this program cultivates is very welcoming and I found their goals and interests to align with mine. During my interview, I felt I could feel at home in this program and that my wellbeing and goals would be of value to those who would train and support me here!
