I grew up in a home with parents who were born and raised in Nigeria and came to the United States to build new lives for themselves. Their hard work and perseverance afforded them the opportunities that me and my siblings were fortunate to experience. Being in a home where medicine and caring for others were sewn into the fibers of who we are, it was no surprise that I wanted to become a physician. As I moved through my pre-clinical and clinical years of medical school I knew that I valued every aspect of medicine and wanted a field that allowed me to pursue all my interests and upheld my values. I wanted to build relationships with my patients and stand by their side during the best and worst of times. I wanted to interact with various fields of medicine in my everyday practice and work with my hands, from minor surgeries to in-office procedures. As someone who values leadership and advocacy, I wanted a field that actively works on the items that will help advance us forward. Additionally, as an African American female who is underrepresented in medicine, I am especially called to serve other vulnerable populations and help address the disparities we see in healthcare.
When I completed my sub-internship at Emory, I immediately felt like I did not have to explain my purpose. The people around me understood my passions and were already doing work to make changes in the field. The team I interacted with, from the residents, to faculty, to medical assistants, and support staff all made me feel at home. These individuals became friends and mentors overnight. I wanted the resources and prestige of an academic institution that was based in a community that is underserved. I wanted strong broad-spectrum training in an environment that was diverse in the patients they see, the residents they recruit, and the faculty they keep. But most importantly, I wanted a supportive environment that will help build me into the physician I want to become. I trust that I will get a sound training at a top 25% institution with some of the brightest minds in medicine in a city as extraordinary as Atlanta! Beyond blessed to be joining the Emory Family & Preventive Medicine Team!
