Family Medicine encompasses the ideal specialty for me; it is everything all at once. I love how extensive and diverse the cases and patient populations can be, thereby challenging us to learn and improve our skill sets. I am also passionate about the primary care element that allows us to be the first to tackle patient concerns and to coordinate their care while tailoring each plan to each patient. What I love most about this specialty, though, are the long-term and deep relationships we can form with our patients that are built on trust and compassion. This specialty allows us to be well-rounded nurturers, and that is something I consider to be a necessity in my career.
I chose Emory University’s Family Medicine program because it was one that was in line with my future career goals, as well as my current personal values. Emory’s DFPM offers rigorous education and training in many different hospitals, giving us great exposure and learning opportunities. Moreover, Emory FM is an academic program that offers an array of research and teaching prospects, which is what I was looking for. A great bonus was that this program offers an abundance of opportunities tailored to residents’ interests. Lastly, I could tell how inclusive, kind, and supportive the nature of the relationships were between faculty and residents during my interview and meet-and-greet and that, to me, was an assurance that residents are well taken care of.
