Emory GHEMS met in Eswatini for the country’s first emergency medicine and research conference this past week where 200 delegates attended. Drs. Phindile Chowa and Anna Yaffee were part of the planning committee and served as moderators and speakers at the conference. Dr. Abigail Hankin-Wei participated in a panel discussion along with her emergency medicine residents from Mozambique. The Honorable Minister of Health of Eswatini was in attendance, as was Her Royal Highness and Regional Administrator Princess of Eswatini. Drs. Chowa and Yaffee also implemented the WHO Basic Emergency Care course for 49 medical professionals in Eswatini. The week ended with the Ministry of Health pledging to start an Emergency Medicine Society for the country. 

Dr. Anna Yaffee successfully piloted a multidisciplinary advanced trauma care training course at The Indus Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, training 21 physicians from emergency medicine, orthopedics, general surgery, anesthesia, and urology, and 14 emergency department nurses. Jessica Menke, a trauma nurse educator from Grady Memorial Hospital, assisted with the nursing training.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Sheryl Heron (left) has been appointed Lead ACEP Ambassador to Jamaica and Dr. Vanessa Cousins has been appointed Deputy ACEP Ambassador to Jamaica.

Dr. Kazzi hosted medical students enrolled in the US MD Program at Tbilisi Medical State University (TMSU). This program utilizes a curriculum that is modeled after the Emory School of Medicine curriculum. The Emory School of Medicine collaborates closely with TMSU. Medical students discussed with Dr. Kazzi various topics related to emergency medicine, education and research. They also got a chance to tour the ECC. 

Andrés Patiño, MD, in his role as ACEP Ambassador to Ecuador, co-chaired the first forum on the Future of Emergency Medicine in Ecuador, with Professor Augusto Maldonado, MD, from the Universidad Santiago de Quito, in Quito, Ecuador.

Dr. Ziad Kazzi is serving as a deputy editor of MedJEM, the new open-access Mediterranean Journal of Emergency Medicine & Acute Care published by the Mediterranean Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Explains Dr Amin Kazzi, Editor-in-Chief, "emergency, urgent and acute care around the Mediterranean basin have reached over the last three decades a level of development, complexity and needs that require the establishment of a regional internationally-driven medical journal."

Dr. Ezio Massinga visited Emory University and shared his experiences at the forefront of Emergency Medicine development and disaster response in Mozambique. His resident lecture was captivating. The training program in Mozambique was started in collaboration by Dr. Abigail Hankin-Wei, Emory faculty and GHEMS member. Emory residents and faculty travel to Mozambique to help teach and learn from the residents there, and also provide tele-education when back in Atlanta.

Section members spoke at the American College of Academic International Medicine in Philadelphia, on topics including adapting education in differently resourced settings and global health security.

Dr. Ziad Kazzi trained 40 physicians in the former Republic of Georgia on the medical assessment and management of elevated blood lead levels, and 75 emergency physicians and nurses on recognition and management of an illness cluster. His efforts were covered by local media and he was recognized by the UNICEF regional director for his efforts on the lead project, for which he has future plans for additional endeavors. 

Emory Emergency Medicine and Section of Global Health faculty member, Dr. Bryan McNally, is working in Southeast Asia to support out of hospital cardiac arrest care.

The Global Health in Emergency Medicine Section (GHEMS) is Emory EM’s newest Section. The section is headed by faculty member Anna Yaffee, MD. She is excited to have numerous globally minded residents, faculty and APPs working towards our mission to build EM capacity and preparedness around the world through the development of sustainable, bilateral educational partnerships that promote the training of health care providers in EM.

Dr. Rachel Libby discusses her experience in the Emory Global Health Residency Scholars Program. The culmination of this experience was a month-long rotation at Black Lion Hospital/Addis Ababa University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 

Emory hosts first-ever multinational case conference over web platform. We discussed an asthma case with Emory EM residents, Mozambique PLeDGE health residents, and Vietnam EM residents. 

Emory Hosts Journal Club in Mozambique. Emory faculty-led journal club for the PLeDGE Mozambique EM residents in Maputo, Mozambique. It was a great educational and social event, in multiple languages!

Emory University Department of Emergency Medicine faculty are working in collaboration with the Middle East & North Africa Clinical Toxicology Association (MENATOX) to organize an international medical toxicology conference. The purpose of the conference is to educate physicians in the MENA region about the impact of chemicals, toxins and radioactive materials, among other hazards.
