Department of Emergency Medicine

A message from our WEDI Director

Michelle Lall

It’s such an exciting time for Emory Emergency Medicine as we continue to grow and lead nationally in the arenas of Wellness and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The mission of the Wellness Section of Emergency Medicine at Emory University is to “contribute to Emory’s status as a ‘best place to work’ by creating and maintaining a working environment that nurtures the well-being and professional fulfillment of all staff.” Our section strives to provide local, regional and national leadership toward improving the health and wellness of all physicians and healthcare providers. Physician, APP and staff wellness are of paramount importance, and while the ongoing impact of COVID-19 has presented some challenges, it has also provided the opportunity to innovate. As in the past, the wellness committee is working hard to provide social outlets to build and foster our Emory EM community. Some of our pandemic friendly events have included; Wellness Wednesday emails, a virtual trivia night, a virtual wine tasting, small service events with Food 4 Lives, the Angel Tree project, and an outdoor family event. Additional resources to support our department’s wellness during the pandemic have provided group support sessions with a psychologist, virtual yoga, and counseling through the Faculty Staff Assistance Program. To take care of others, you must first take care of yourself.

Equity, diversity and inclusion are core principles of our Department. Our allyship with those who are underrepresented in medicine is quintessential in our drive towards eminence. Inclusion brings us closer to equity and enables us to institute change and maintain support where needed in our community. This year we have reorganized our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (EDIC) in an effort to better and continue to expand our work in this arena. EDIC has faculty, resident, APP, and staff members with 13 subcommittees working to achieve equity, diversity and inclusion in the Department of Emergency Medicine. EDIC sends out monthly cultural awareness emails as a commitment to continuing education. EDIC is committed to social justice and produced a video made by our residents and faculty talking about their experiences with racism that was commended by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Michelle Lall is an Emergency Medicine Professor and Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She is also the Director of Wellness, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
