Welcome to the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Emory University. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is located at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital. Children's serves metropolitan Atlanta and surrounding areas with a population of more than 6 million—one of the largest pediatric service areas in the country.
Arthur M. Blank Hospital, a freestanding 446 bed pediatric hospital, serves as the primary academic, research and teaching hospital for the system, and provides quaternary-level pediatric care for the children in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The hospital opened in Sept. 2024 and is located at the corner of I-85 and North Druid Hills Road in Atlanta. It is the home to training in pediatrics for Emory medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows, see also the link: Department of Pediatrics. Children's manages more than 1 million patient visits annually and 245,000 Emergency Department visits. Arthur M. Blank Hospital provides ECMO, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and plasmapheresis to neonatal, cardiac and other pediatric patients.
The PICU at Arthur M. Blank Hospital is a 60 bed state-of-the-art medical-surgical interdisciplinary unit . Each room features single occupancy with airflow isolation, dual articulated equipment booms, mobile computers, and capabilities for full organ failure support, including ECMO or CCRT, and space for families to sleep.
The PICU at Arthur M. Blank Hospital is staffed by board certified Care Medicine specialists and supports a fully accredited Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program. Critical Care Medicine physicians provide care for children with the full range of pediatric critical care illness including respiratory, cardiovascular, renal and liver dysfunction. The unit provides the full array of advanced respiratory support, including non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, and inhaled nitric oxide and isoflurane. The unit has an active extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) Center and offers CRRT and provision of therapeutic plasma exchange. Blank Hospital cares for blood and marrow transplant and solid organ transplant recipients. In addition, critical care medicine physicians provide consultative support for a wide array of post-operative patients, including complex general, trauma, orthopedic, ENT surgery and neurosurgical procedures, all available 24/7.
Children's has one of the largest pediatric transport teams in the country, handling more than 4,000 transports each year. It enables efficient and rapid transport with a dedicated pediatric team. Children’s offers ground support with one specialty NICU team, as well as four Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) trucks that provide neonatal and pediatric specialty care 24/7.
