Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Rotation
Overview
The Emory Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery rotation provides a comprehensive clinical experience for medical students, offering foundational skills and exposure to all subspecialties of otolaryngology.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the rotation, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of common head and neck conditions
- Perform a thorough head and neck physical examination
- Recognize indications for specialty evaluation or diagnostic testing
- Understand core procedural and diagnostic techniques in otolaryngology

Rotation Structure & Schedule
This is a four-week clinical rotation. Students will rotate through:
- Emory University Hospital Midtown
- Grady Memorial Hospital
- Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Arthur M. Blank Hospital
- Emory Decatur Hospital
These sites provide broad exposure to general otolaryngology, otology/neurotology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck oncology, and pediatric ENT.
Educational Components
- Grand Rounds – Thursdays at 7:00 a.m.
- Resident Didactics – Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Rotation-Specific Teaching Sessions
Attendance is expected and integral to the educational experience.
Evaluation Criteria
- Medical Knowledge – Active engagement in clinical care and educational sessions; integration of assigned reading with clinical cases
- Patient Care – Participation in rounds, clinics, and operative cases with sound clinical reasoning
- Professionalism – Punctuality, respectful behavior, and completion of all required activities
- Communication & Systems-Based Practice – Clear communication and understanding of multidisciplinary, hospital-based care
Policies & Practical Information
- Application – Visiting students must apply through Emory's Visiting Medical Student Program at least two months prior to your intended start date
- Scheduling – Rotations are scheduled in four-week blocks in accordance with the Emory School of Medicine academic calendar
- Attire – Professional dress is required for clinic days. Scrubs for operative days will be provided by the OR
- Expectations – Students must be prompt, professional, and fully engaged. Occasional late cases or scheduling changes should be anticipated
