Mission
The Department of Orthopaedics' commitment to inclusive excellence is foundational to achieving our mission of excellence in delivery of muscle skeletal health care. The department is a mission-driven organization, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are at the heart of what we do. These values inform our internal culture and drive our external focus on making a difference for patients and communities the we serve. We actively seek talent who bring different backgrounds, perspectives, experiences, and identities to their work and demonstrate a commitment to advancing our mission.
Goals
To achieve a diverse and inclusive department community that includes faculty, staff, and trainees that reflects the community in which we serve
To strive for everyone in our community to understand the basics of unconscious bias, and be able to knowledge their own bias, toward the goal of eliminating those to the best of everyone ability
Provide resources and education to help build awareness on matters related to equity, diversity, inclusion, antiracism and social justice among faculty, staff and learners.
Provide educational and research opportunities in muscle, skeletal disease to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or self-identify as underrepresented in medicine.
Values
A team/department comprised of diverse backgrounds. These diverse backgrounds will inspire diversity of thought which fosters innovation. A diverse workforce does work differently and does different work (which is a strength for any organization).
Accountability - we need to add “accountability” to diversity equity, and inclusion. We need to demonstrate our commitment to DEI through measurables.
Pipeline programs - they are not random. They are deterministic. If they are deterministic then we can affect the filters or levers. We value the ability to influence diversity within the department.
