The Lifestyle Medicine Distinction Track is designed for primary care track residents seeking advanced training in the prevention, treatment, and reversal of chronic disease through evidence-based lifestyle interventions. This track integrates clinical training, didactic education, and experiential learning to prepare residents to incorporate lifestyle medicine into routine patient care across diverse clinical settings. Due to the requirements of the distinction, completion of this distinction is only feasible for residents in the primary care track.
Program Components
The program curriculum is anchored in the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC), a nationally recognized, competency-based program. Through the LMRC, residents complete structured modules covering the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, substance use, and social connection. Content is reinforced through case-based discussions, reflective exercises, and application to real-world clinical scenarios.
Additional components of the track include:
- Clinical experience in a dedicated lifestyle medicine or weight management clinic
- Faculty mentorship with regular progress reviews and support for any quality improvement or scholarly projects related to lifestyle medicine
- Opportunity to make progress towards completion of requirements for Lifestyle Medicine board certification by the time of residency graduation
Program Requirements
- Completion of all 10 online modules in the Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC) with a passing score and completion of application activities for a total of 3 modules of the resident’s choosing. The resident will have a total of 40 hours protected time over the course of the PGY-2 and PGY-3 to complete these requirements. This protected time will be allocated as a 4-hour block in each 4 week Y block. This will replace a half day of subspeciality clinic.
- Participation in a dedicated lifestyle or weight management clinic for a minimum of 4 clinic sessions per year
- Biannual check ins with distinction program director
Additional Opportunities
Those residents who would like to complete all requirements to sit for the Lifestyle Medicine residency boards, will be provided with faculty mentorship and guidance on the additional activities that need to be completed.
