Overview and Keynote Talk
The Stephen T. Warren Memorial Symposium was held on November 29 and 30, 2022. Dr. Warren was the founding chair of Emory's Department of Human Genetics and a leader in the study of fragile X syndrome. Specifically, he led the international team that discovered the gene responsible for fragile X in the 1990s. Please see this mini-biography of Dr. Warren, who died in 2021.
The keynote speaker for the event was Harry Orr, PhD, Professor and James Schindler and Bob Allison Ataxia Chair in Translational Research, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Minnesota. His topic was "Spinocerebellar Ataxia, an Inherited Neurological Disorder."
Reflections on Dr. Warren's Legacy
The symposium's two day agenda also included "Reflections on Dr. Stephen T. Warren's Legacy," co-presented by Emily Allen, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Genetics, and Emily Warren, co-founder of The Fragile X Association of Georgia and mother of a fragile X patient. Mrs. Warren recounts how she directly experienced the benefits of Dr. Warren's research.
