						JULY 2025
Erin Kistenberg, MMSc, Emory Genetic Counseling Training Program Class of 2025, won the Best Trainee Presentation Award at the Southeastern Regional Genetics Group (SERGG) 42nd Annual Meeting, July 17-19, in Asheville, NC. The title of her focus capstone research project was "Newborn screening for Pompe disease in Georgia: Results and factors affecting timely resolution of a positive screen."
In 2021, Pompe newborn screening was implemented in Georgia. Ms. Kistenberg's research found that 21 late-onset cases were identified and no infantile-onset cases. The average time from birth to resolution was 60 days (STD 38). The factors affecting delayed resolution included the ordering of incorrect testing, primary care physician unfamiliarity, multiple sample draws, and language barriers.
