Ansley McCarty grew up outside of Raleigh, NC. She graduated from North Carolina State University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Genetics and minors in both Biotechnology and Microbiology. After changing her major a few times, she was introduced to Genetic Counseling in her Intro to Genetics course during her second semester.
While at NC State, Ansley was a member of the NC State Dance Team for four years and the leadership team for three. Additionally, she was a member of the Department of Biological Sciences Honors Program, where she conducted genetics research at NC State’s School of Veterinary Medicine. She studied dog cytogenetics and diagnosed a dog with a genetic abnormality. In her free time, she would volunteer with Gigi’s Playhouse and became a literacy tutor.
After graduation, Ansley worked as a genetic counseling assistant for UNC Chapel Hill in both cancer and pediatric genetics clinical settings. She was able to shadow many genetics clinics, including the multidisciplinary Angelman clinic and UNC’s MPS center. Also, she was privileged to present a poster at WORLDSymposium in 2025, a case report on a patient with a Lysosomal Storage Disorder. Ansley is extremely grateful for all the experiences she had both in undergrad and post-grad. She feels these opportunities have been invaluable to her preparedness for both graduate school and joining the field.
Outside the classroom, Ansley enjoys staying active with workout classes, exploring the city, baking, and reading. She is extremely excited and grateful to be a part of Emory’s Genetic Counseling Program and welcomes any contact from prospective students for advice or questions.
