Liana Kendrick is from Charlotte, North Carolina and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2023 with a Bachelor’s in Economics and a minor in Environmental Sciences and Studies. During her senior year, she realized that a career in economics lacked the personal connection to her community that she was seeking. As she explored other careers she was drawn to genetics, a subject that had fascinated her since her high school AP Biology class, and found genetic counseling.
After graduation, Liana reenrolled at UNC Chapel Hill as a non-degree student for three semesters to complete prerequisites for genetic counseling programs. She frequently met with her genetics professor for guidance on applying to graduate school and pursuing a career in genetics.
During this time, Liana worked as a medical scribe with the UNC Neurology Movement Disorders Clinic and UNC Children’s Neurology, where she gained experience with patient charting, observed clinical care, and witnessed the delivery of complex diagnoses. Here, she had the opportunity to shadow the on-site genetic counselor. Working with providers at UNC gave her insight to the value of genetic counseling in patient care. This experience solidified her decision to pursue a career as a genetic counselor and she is extremely thankful for the meaningful connections she made. Additionally, she volunteered with the American Red Cross as a Casework Recovery Team Member, where she developed crisis management skills as she helped families navigate recovery after disasters.
Outside of her educational and professional experience, Liana’s background as the daughter of a Greek immigrant has encouraged her to pursue a career with a focus on advocacy, as advocating for her Greek-speaking grandparents taught her the importance of accessibility and understanding in patient care. She is looking forward to extending that same advocacy into her career as a genetic counselor.
In her free time Liana enjoys going on walks, trying new restaurants, reading, and playing with her kitten. She is extremely excited to explore Atlanta and to be part of the Emory GCTP! She is open to any questions about her experience and would be happy to share advice with prospective students.
