Julie Schrey is from Perkasie, PA and graduated from Albright College with her bachelor’s degree in biology/biotechnology in 2020. While at Albright, she pursued a variety of research including investigating sesquiterpene molecules through computational organic chemistry as well as characterizing a vaccinia virus epidermal growth factor homolog found in ectromelia (mousepox) virus. During this time, Julie was also a Resident Assistant for 3 years building relationships and counseling students on academic and personal issues.
After graduating from Albright, she spent a brief period working in the pharmaceutical industry, but ultimately returned to academia working in a Hematology lab at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to study the role of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in the inflammatory environment of the leukemic niche in murine models. During this opportunity, she was able to discover and explore genetic counseling as a future career path. Wanting a more meaningful opportunity to explore counseling, she became a volunteer crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line to provide support to those experiencing challenging times.
In her free time, Julie loves spending time with friends and family, baking, crocheting, and exploring all Atlanta has to offer! She is very excited and proud to be joining Emory GCTP, especially as a first-generation student. As someone who made the leap to transition careers, she is happy to answer any questions from prospective students.
