Jenna Mathwig is from Fremont, WI, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 2021 with her degree in Genetics. While at the University of Georgia in Athens, she enjoyed attending UGA football games (Go Dawgs!), co-raising and training dogs for the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, and serving with the Athens Reproductive Justice Collective. During this period, she also began volunteering with the Crisis Text Line as a volunteer crisis counselor, which sent her down the path of advocacy and helping others. She's thankful to her undergraduate research mentors and the time she spent conducting research as a summer research fellow identifying and isolating ice-nucleating bacteria, and hybrid necrosis as a potential reproductive barrier in Mimulus tilingii for an undergraduate thesis.
After graduating, she moved back to Wisconsin to work as a laboratory genetic counseling assistant for PreventionGenetics. She's extremely grateful for her time there, especially to all the genetic counselors and other genetic counseling assistants she learned from. While in Marshfield, Jenna also volunteered with Crisis Text Line, Promedica Hospice, Marshfield Clinic's Cattails Cottage, Marshfield Area Special Olympics, and PDC Orenda Center. She is beyond excited to continue expanding her passion for helping patients and their families as a genetic counselor.
Outside of genetics and genetic counseling, Jenna loves hunting, fishing, hiking, exercising, reading, and cooking. Now that she's in Atlanta, she's excited to explore new restaurants and bookstores, as well as attend more concerts. She's happy to talk with any prospective students or anyone interested in the field of genetic counseling. She feels very grateful for the people in her life who helped her get this far and is very excited to be a part of the Emory University Genetic Counseling Training Program class of 2025!
