Overview
Since 2014, Dr. Kapil served as Chief Medical Officer and Associate Director for Science at the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, until his retirement in September, 2024. In this role he was responsible for oversight science quality, scientific integrity and ethics and extramural research programs for global public health activities for CDC’s Global Health Center including over 60 country offices around the world. Previously at CDC (since 2002), he served as the Associate Director for Science and the Acting Deputy Director for CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health & Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) and the Associate Director for the Division of Injury Response in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC).
He attended medical school at Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine and received a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) from The University of Michigan. He completed residency training in Emergency Medicine at POH Medical Center (now Mclaren-Oakland) in Pontiac, Michigan and in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Prior to joining CDC in 2002, Dr. Kapil Served as the Director of the Department of Occupational Medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital in Toledo, Ohio and Associate Senior Vice-President for Occupational Health and Safety at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Dr. Kapil is licensed to practice medicine in Georgia and Ohio and holds adjunct faculty appointments at Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine and Emory University School of Public Health, Department of Environmental Health. His primary areas of research and clinical interest include environmental and occupational lung disease, environmental toxicology, climate change and health, preparedness and response for mass casualty events, and health systems improvement in low and middle-income countries.
