The Emory University School of Medicine Anesthesia Residency program aims to research, develop and teach perioperative simulation to all our residents. The Simulation experience functions as an integral part of the education curriculum.
Educational Objective
The educational objective is to develop fundamental technical skills, enhance decision-making skills, and assess competencies during residency. Simulation is unique in that it provides an opportunity to train residents and fellows in the emergency management of life-threatening events, as well as commonly encountered OR scenarios, in a controlled setting. The tenets of Crisis Resource Management are also taught in the Simulation Lab.
When will simulation training occur and what is included in the training?
The simulation experience begins during CA-1 orientation; new residents gain confidence through intense simulation focused on difficult airway skills and team-based management of OR emergencies. Training also includes management of malignant hyperthermia, shock, and anaphylaxis as well as reinforcement of technical skills. This training is part of the curriculum offered to residents throughout the residency. Within the next 18 months, our Director of Simulation, Dr. Chris Little will be rolling out new in situ multidisciplinary simulation.
Goal of Simulation Training
Our program is dedicated to utilizing simulation techniques as an important and innovative teaching tool that will enable learners to develop a strong foundation and acquire the competencies necessary to become an anesthesiologist. This educational experience is invaluable and greatly enhances the residency experience.
