The Department of Anesthesiology at Emory University School of Medicine is proud to be among the nations’ leading academic anesthesiology departments with a long standing commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and research. Our department provides anesthesiology services at 21 clinical sites and comprises of more than 150 clinical and research faculty working across large and diverse healthcare enterprise, delivering compassionate patient centered care. Our department spans the full breadth of contemporary anesthesiology including cardiothoracic anesthesiology, critical care medicine, neurosurgical and obstetric anesthesiology, trauma liver transplantation, chronic pain, regional anesthesiology and acute pain, ambulatory and perioperative medicine. Across the system our faculty provide care for some of the most complex and high risk patients in the southeast and beyond.
Education remains central to our mission, our ACGME accredited anesthesiology residency program offers comprehensive clinical exposure across multiple sites. Residents benefit from an exceptional case mix, dedicated faculty members in a culture that emphasizes progressive responsibility alongside faculty mentorship, scholarship and professionalism. We offer a broad portfolio of subspecialty fellowships including adult and pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesiology, critical care medicine, pain medicine, pediatric anesthesiology, obstetric anesthesiology, regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine, neuroanesthesiology and transplant anesthesiology. These programs prepare fellows to become leaders in clinical practice and in academic anesthesiology.
The department is deeply committed to research and academic discovery and is home to a dedicated hemostasis and coagulation core laboratory. Our faculty conduct research in areas such as coagulation hemostasis, cardiac anesthesia, pain medicine and critical care medicine. Extramural research funding has steadily grown reflecting the strength as has the trajectory of our scholarly mission.
Service beyond our institution is a defining aspect of our identity. The department of anesthesiology has a long history of engagement in global health and humanitarian initiatives supporting faculty and resident participation in international anesthesiology education. Our global partnerships include work and resource limited settings such Rwanda, aligning with Emory University’s overarching mission to applying knowledge the service of humanity.
