Barbara Stoll, MD and Lucky Jain, MD - Emory University School of Medicine’s former and outgoing Department of Pediatrics chairs, respectively - have each been honored with endowed professorships created in their names.
Generously funded by Raymond Schinazi, PhD, Hon. DSc, the new positions have been named the Barbara Stoll-Raymond Schinazi Distinguished Professorship in Pediatrics and Lucky Jain-Raymond Schinazi Distinguished Professorship in Pediatrics.
“Barbara is an inspiration. Our previous chair, George Brumley, would be proud to see what the department became thanks to Barbara’s leadership. And Lucky has supported research like no other leader. They say success has many parents, and they are the father and mother of all of us in so many ways,” says Schinazi, a fellow Emory professor and scientist. “I am proud that our names will be connected to excellence in pediatrics at Emory far into the future.”
Stoll served as the George W. Brumley Jr. Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Emory from 2003 to 2015. At the University of Texas Health Sciences Center between 2015 and 2020, she was the H. Wayne Hightower Distinguished Professor in the Medical Sciences, a professor of pediatrics, and the first woman to serve as dean of McGovern Medical School. From 2021 to 2023 she was president of the China Medical Board and is currently executive vice president.
Jain, who retired at the end of 2024, was pediatrician in chief at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; George W. Brumley Jr. Professor; chair of the Emory Department of Pediatrics; and executive director of the Emory + Children’s Pediatric Institute.
Schinazi is the Frances Winship Walters Professor of Pediatrics, director of the Division of Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology and a member of ViroScience and Cure Center within the Department of Pediatrics. His research group has expertise spanning medicinal chemistry, virology, biochemistry, molecular biology, toxicology, pharmacology, immunology and computational and structural biology.
“These gifts from Dr. Schinazi solidify his commitment to the School of Medicine and are prime examples of his longstanding generosity to Emory,” says Sandra Wong, MD, dean of the medical school and chief academic officer for Emory Healthcare.
“To endow these distinguished professorships in the names of Drs. Jain and Stoll strengthens the School of Medicine and honors these incredible leaders in pediatrics,” she says. “Our department has only grown from their expertise and reputation, and these professorships will help us attract even more top-quality faculty to Emory.”
Gifts to support the Stoll-Schinazi and Jain-Schinazi Distinguished Professorships will foster an interdisciplinary environment that prepares students for lifelong success. The professorships are also supported by generous grants from the Zeist Foundation and will benefit from matching support from Emory University President Gregory L. Fenves’ Faculty Eminence Initiative. Additional gifts of any amount are appreciated.
The faculty members who will be selected to hold them will strengthen the department’s work to provide excellent clinical care and improve quality of life through scientific research and training. These professorships encourage rising stars and help make Emory a destination - rather than a stepping stone - for advancement.
