
Ebiere Herbertson, PhD, is Director (Pharmacy) at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research. She is also an adjunct Instructor/Research Scholar at the Kano Independent Research Center Trust. Dr. Herbertson was selected to receive the first competitive Emory-Nigeria Research Training Program (EN-RTP) traineeship (2019 – 2021). Shortly after in 2022, she was selected for the prestigious IeDEA-Fogarty Mentorship Program (FIMP). She received training on biostatistics, scientific/proposal writing and mentored research from EN-RTP, and had mentorship in database analysis from the IeDEA-Fogarty Mentorship Program. Both traineeships equipped her to write her first NIH grant, the NIH/Fogarty K43 Emerging Global Leader in HIV Research (Capacity Development Grant). Her application received funding for five years (2023 -2028) to develop capacity in big data analysis and to carry out research on the “Use of Pharmacoepidemiology to Understand the Predictors and Impact of Low-level Viremia on HIV Positive Persons in West Africa”. In 2024, Dr Herbertson received supplement funding on the K43 grant to mentor two MPH students on research focused on HIV in women.
Having enjoyed high quality mentoring, Dr. Herbertson applied her experience to mentor two candidate who applied for the 2024 EN-RTP call. Both candidates were successful with their applications, one candidate, Ms. Rukayat Jimoh received long-term and the other, Dr. Patricia Ogbo received medium-term funding.
