Erin Poe Ferranti, PhD, MPH, RN, FAHA, is a tenure track Assistant Professor of Nursing at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. Dr. Corwin was her primary mentor and Dr. Dunlop was her co-mentor during her BIRCWH appointment.
Dr. Ferranti's area of interest is focused on identifying dietary strategies to mitigate cardiometabolic risk burden in women of childbearing age who have had cardiometabolic complications during pregnancy. In this BIRCWH K12 proposal, entitled “Microbiome, Diet and Persistence of Cardiometabolic Dysregulation in African American Postpartum Women”, she will examine mechanistic determinants of within-race variability for the persistence of cardiometabolic dysregulation (defined by prediabetes/diabetes, prehypertension/hypertension and/or metabolic syndrome) in the postpartum timeframe in women who had gestational diabetes and/or gestational hypertension during pregnancy. This research builds on her graduate training and dissertation study which examined individual and family/social influences of diet quality and cardiometabolic risk status in 75 women within five years of a pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes (GDM) where it was found that women with previous GDM had significant cardiometabolic risk factors and were consuming a suboptimal quality diet as defined by the Alternate Healthy Eating Index. Higher levels of education and dietary self-efficacy were important predictors in determining healthier dietary patterns. Dr. Ferranti is very excited for the additional training and mentorship provided by the BIRCWH opportunity. She plans to become an independent academic researcher and expert nurse scientist in cardiometabolic risk prevention.
