Overview
The OB Track is designed to provide an in-depth, focused training experience in obstetrics and
women's health for one resident per year. This track aims to enhance the resident’s clinical skills,
knowledge, and experience in managing a broad range of obstetric cases, preparing them for
potential fellowships or advanced practice in women's health.

Goals and Objectives
Clinical Skills:
- Develop proficiency in managing labor and delivery, including vaginal deliveries, the use of obstetric interventions, and emergency procedures.
- Perineal repair of first and second-degree lacerations.
- Gain experience in prenatal and postnatal care, including routine and high-risk pregnancies
- OB/GYN ultrasound training, provided by Emory FM/OB faculty.
Knowledge Base and Teaching:
- Understand the pathophysiology of common and complex obstetric conditions.
- Stay updated with the latest research and guidelines in obstetrics and women's health.
- Lead 2 OB-related didactics topics in PGY-2 and PGY-3.
- Assist in leading 1 OB workshop for the residency program in PGY-2 and PGY-3.
- Attend additional CME for OB/GYN topics at least one conference. Possible options include:

- Foster skills in teamwork, leadership, and communication in a high-stress environment

Eligibility and Selection
Eligibility:
- Applications are open to residents in good standing who have demonstrated strong performance in family medicine and a particular interest in obstetrics and women's health.
- A maximum of 1 resident per year will be selected for the track.
- Applications will be open in the Spring with an expected start date of July 1.
Selection Criteria:
- Strong academic performance and evaluations from faculty.
- Demonstrated interest in obstetrics through participation in related activities or electives.
- A personal statement outlining the resident’s goals and commitment to the OB track.
- Interviews with the selection committee, including OB faculty and program director.
Track Requirements
Curriculum Components
1. Clinical Electives:
- OB/GYN L&D rotations (5 months minimum, 3 electives): Residents will spend time in OB/GYN labor and delivery units to gain hands-on experience.
- Elective 1: [PGY-2]
- Elective 2: [PGY-3]
- Elective 3: [PGY-3]
- GYN Procedures (1-2 months of electives): Residents will rotate through the Women’s Health/GYN department at ESJH.
- Residents will rotate through the O4W Women’s Health Clinic.
- Residents may seek out extra opportunities at the Dunwoody Procedure Clinic.
2. Vaginal Deliveries:
- Minimum Requirement: 60 vaginal deliveries.
- Aim: 80 vaginal deliveries.
- Residents will be closely monitored to ensure they meet the required number of deliveries, with support provided as necessary to achieve the target.
- Objective: To provide residents with exposure to and experience in performing and assisting with cesarean sections.
- Exposure Plan: Residents will have opportunities to observe and participate in C-sections during their OB/GYN L&D electives and other relevant rotations.
- Aim: 20 C-sections scrubbed in as either first or second assist.
- Documentation: Residents will document their C-section experience, including involvement in procedures.
Application Process
- Residents may apply beginning March 1st of their PGY-1 year and must apply by October 1st of their PGY-2 year.
- Application must include their CV and a 1-page personal statement submitted via email to the OB Track Director and cc to the Residency Program Director.
- The selection committee will review applications and conduct interviews as needed.
Assessment and Evaluation
Ongoing Evaluation: Quarterly feedback from OB track leadership.
Final Evaluation: A comprehensive review at the end of the OB track, including selfassessment, supervisor evaluations, and a summary of clinical experiences and skills
acquired documented in New Innovations.
