Dear colleagues:
I am pleased to announce the addition of two new and important roles to the School of Medicine leadership team.
RESEARCH
Adam Marcus, PhD, has been named to the role of senior associate dean of research effective Jan. 15. Dr. Marcus is the Winship 5K Research Professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology and serves as deputy director for Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. During his 23 years as an Emory faculty member, Dr. Marcus has made significant contributions to Emory’s research enterprise and held numerous leadership roles, including serving as associate vice president for research for the Woodruff Health Sciences Center. Dr. Marcus’s breadth of experience across basic science, translational and clinical research, combined with his tremendous leadership skills, strategic vision and commitment to collaboration, make him an outstanding fit for this role.
As senior associate dean for research, Dr. Marcus will be responsible for refining the School of Medicine research strategy in close partnership with Woodruff Health Sciences Center leaders, School of Medicine leaders, and department chairs and vice chairs of research across the school. He will also guide the implementation of this strategic plan across basic, translational and clinical sciences, collaborating with leaders across institutions to identify strategic opportunities and innovative models for advancing research. Dr. Marcus will work closely with Chief Operating Officer Farah Chapes to oversee research infrastructure across the school, as well as finance, budgeting and operations in support of the research strategy.
In his past role of associate vice president for research for Woodruff Health Sciences Center, Dr. Marcus established new research initiatives through strategic planning, developed new RFAs, created new research metrics and benchmarks, and helped guide research investments from the state. Dr. Marcus has also served as associate dean for innovation and core technologies in the School of Medicine, leading 21 core facilities and integrating SOM research strategy into research core infrastructure. His own research lab spans NIH-funded basic cancer cell biology, pre-clinical research, clinical trials collaborations, and community-engaged research working with communities throughout the state. During his tenure at Emory, he has been a longstanding principal- or co-investigator on a wide variety of NIH funding mechanisms including individual, team science, and training grants.
Given his significant leadership experience across WHSC, Winship Cancer Institute, the School of Medicine and national societies, we look forward to all Dr. Marcus will bring to this critically important executive role.
FACULTY AFFAIRS
David A. Kooby, MD, FACS, has been named the senior associate dean of faculty affairs. Dr. Kooby is a professor in the Division of Surgical Oncology of the Department of Surgery. He serves as Chief of Emory Surgery in the Northern Arc for both Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Emory John’s Creek Hospital. He is the Chief of Staff and Chair of the Board of Directors for Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital and was recently recognized for his service contributions to the hospital.
As senior associate dean, Dr. Kooby will provide leadership in multiple aspects of faculty affairs, including human resources, risk management, and compliance, including conflict-of-interest and regulatory policies. He will also oversee standardization of processes related to faculty policies in the school.
Dr. Kooby will work closely with Joshua Barwick, JD, associate dean of faculty affairs administration, and Kathy Griendling, PhD. Dr. Griendling remains in her role of executive associate dean of faculty affairs and professional development, and will continue to oversee faculty appointments and promotions, chair searches, faculty evaluations, clinical distinctions, professional development, and Continuing Medical Education. He will also partner with Dr. Penny Castellano in her role as senior associate dean of clinical affairs in addition to her roles as president of the Emory Healthcare Physician Division and director of The Emory Clinic.
Dr. Kooby is an international leader in foregut surgery recognized primarily for his contributions in the field of pancreatic surgery and minimally invasive surgical approaches. He is a founding member of the Central Pancreas Consortium, a prolific multicenter outcomes study group. He has held leadership roles in national and international societies, and he co-chaired the first International Conference on Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Resection in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2016. He is frequently invited around the world to lecture on this and related topics.
Join me in congratulating and welcoming Drs. Marcus and Kooby. We are fortunate to have such distinguished leaders in our faculty and I’m confident they will help drive our school to new heights of strategic innovation and operational excellence.
My best,
Sandra
