Dear colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that Susan C. Modesitt, MD, FACOG, FACS, has been named chair of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Emory School of Medicine after an extensive national search. She assumes the role immediately. Dr. Modesitt is currently the Leach Hendee endowed professor of gynecology and obstetrics and has served as division director of gynecologic oncology since she joined the faculty at Emory in March of 2022. She has also served as the Gynecologic Cancer team leader and the chair of the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee for the Winship Cancer Institute since 2022.
Prior to joining Emory, Dr. Modesitt was an endowed professor and division director of gynecologic oncology at the University of Virginia. She completed her undergraduate degree at Emory University as a Woodruff Scholar, then went to medical school at the University of Virginia. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a gynecologic oncology fellowship at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Modesitt is a fellow of both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons where she currently serves as a Governor and has served in multiple other leadership roles within these organizations in addition to the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and NRG Oncology. She is the editor-in-chief of Gynecologic Oncology Reports, the deputy editor for Gynecologic Oncology and has published more than 120 articles, 20 book chapters/invited articles, and has been recognized annually by Castle Connolly as a Top Doctor for Cancer since 2012 and as one of the Exceptional Women in Medicine since 2017. Her research focuses on hereditary cancers, obesity-related cancers and clinical trials in gynecologic oncology.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Penny Castellano for her exceptional leadership as interim chair of the department since July 2023. I am truly grateful for Dr. Castellano’s contributions to the department and to the school. She remains a professor in the department, president of Emory Healthcare Physician Division, and director of the Emory Clinic.
